Korg im1 and iwavestation
Considering one or both of these synths, as they are on sale.
Questions?
Do they support Master tuning? A=444, 432 ….
Do they support alternate scales beyond 12tet? Just intonation, phythagorean…..
I see the iM1 is AUv3, what about iwavestation?
Comments
Hi. I can speak for iM1. It does support Master Tuning. It does support alternate scales/tunings. There are only a few built-in to the AUv3, but you can create your own, offsetting each note as desired. There are quite a few tunings included in the stand-alone keyboard, but the AUv3 does not use the keyboard. This pic shows the AUv3 settings.
It’s the same as above for iwavestation but it isn’t auv3 at present
iWavestation will likely get the AUv3 treatment sooner or later.
For presets, I'd give iM1 a slight edge (if you buy all card packs) and for sound design, I'd go for iWavestation. Both are great though.
I’d get both. They are brilliant and the sound of the 90s.
I have both and I really like them. The big difference for me is that iWavestation is a different beast altogether - it combines multiple sounds in countless ways, so it’s more about soundscaping layers on a large scale and iM1 is a about shaping synth sounds. I use them in different ways.
Hard to go wrong with iM1
If you are going to buy one (or both) I'd say that the IAP add on packs are really worth getting too.
The 2 IAP packs for iM1 takes the number of presets up to something like 3,000.
I use iM1 often now that it is AUv3. I use it to layer sounds with my Korg Minilogue XD and other AUv3 apps. I find the sound on its own far too ‘uncomfortable digital’, yet many of the sounds just make my Minilogue sound wonderful. They seem to inhabit complimentary sound spectrums, if that makes any real sense?
As for the iWavestation, it’s a decent sound to have if you use it wisely - by that I mean don’t over use some of the rhythmic wave sounds as they can be grating after a while. I do like the concept though and some of the sounds that people have done for the Wavestate are making me consider that hardware in the module form. I think of the Korg Wave concept in similar ways to a DX synth in that they can sound like stuck in the past derivative synths of annoyances, or with some work programming them, they can make wonderful sounds that are difficult to find elsewhere! Once iWavestation becomes AUv3, I will use it a lot more!
Funnily, I find the huge choice of factory waveforms is what makes iWavestation very useful to me. I haven't used much wavesequencing except for adding attacks to existing sounds and to build slow sound progressions.
Yes, I meant wave sequencing where I wrote rhythmic wave sounds. The amount of waves is indeed a boon.
Got the iM1, digging it so far. Trying to dive in and navigate this beast. Found a couple YouTube videos that are helpful so far.
Hi. You might take a look at this Wiki article for a quick but complete overview. The original Korg M1 hardware manual is useful for more detail on the effects. And def get all the cards, to have all the sounds. Saving iM1 presets in the AUv3 is a bit of a faff; it was discussed in the thread on the AUv3 release.
Both Are Legends And A MUST As of WaveStation We Are Hoping Korg Make It AUv3 iM1 Is AUv3
Yes. I'm surprised it's taken them this long.
If anyone is interested, here are the Midi Bank and Sub numbers for both iM1 and iWavestation.
OK so panning? I see it for the FX, but can I pan one oscillator, left and the other right? Or in the combo section somewhere pan one part left or right? On the IM1
Have a look at my photo, whilst in Multi or Combi mode, tap on Performance, then tap the mixer icon circled in red, this will give you Pan control over all tracks.
Mike.
Got it Thanks!
