Bench People
This is another in my mini-series of songs that feature the plight of the homeless. The lyrics came quickly, the music and production took days! I’d love to know what folk think of the latter!
If you listen, I thank you very much
Warning: contains an expletive!
It could be an old piano, wrapped in blue
Could be a pile of breeze blocks hidden from view
But the bright tarpaulin starts shifting on its own
An arm appears, then there’s a face, then a home
Bench people you look like you’re watching TV
In zen like contemplation and blind to the likes of you and me
Sitting there on their bench watching the world go by
Swaddled in a pile of old blankets under the leaden sky
Faces on a passing bus turn to stare
These people, do they really live there?
Bench people you look like you’re watching TV
In zen like contemplation and blind to the likes of you and me
The screeching Deliveroos, the roar of the bus
There but for the grace of god, sit you and not us
Bench people, it seems like I’m watching TV
Hipster barbers, bao bun places
Anonymous people with their long lost faces
Market stalls serving up artisan gin
They don’t give a fuck about you about him
Bench people who look like they’re watching TV
The elected self-righteous blind to what they will and won’t see
The screeching Deliveroos, the roar of the bus
We all count our blessings it’s them and not us
Bench people, they look like they’re watching TV

Did you do all the parts? It sounds great to me. I especially like the vocal harmonies and the piano. Hope there will be more songs in this series.
Thanks a lot @myapologies. I played the electric guitar parts, mostly double tracked and panned hard left and right. The acoustic guitar was close miked with no effects. I played the piano on a real Yamaha digital piano, which I'm really pleased about when I think back to just over a year ago when I started learning it for the first time by following an online course.
Quite often when I'm in the process of recording a song I don't know if it is going to "make it" or whether I'll abandon it because it's just not good enough, and to be honest when I added the harmonies, that was the moment I thought, actually that sounds quite good. Thanks again.
Great track Bill. Excellent lyrics for a difficult subject. I do agree with the comment over on SoundCloud, a definite Tull’ish feel to some of your tracks which can only be good 👌
Cheers Tony - I’m a lifelong Tull fan, and years ago I used to adopt a slightly ridiculous Ian Anderson type impersonation when recording my vocals. I made a concious effort to stop that! I personally can’t hear the Tull feel in the song, but it must all be in there on a subliminal level because it’s something that’s mentioned semi-regularly by folk commenting on my songs. Thank you so much for listening 🙏
