Looking for a new audio interface. Any suggestions?
Hi all. I’m looking for something with a few more ins and outs than I’ve got currently. I’m looking to get rid of the mixing desk and do it all in the box. About 8 in and 4 out would do, two Hi-Z inputs if possible, MIDI in and out too.
USB-C too (lucky enough to have an M4)
I’m looking at the M-Audio AIR 192 14 and specs fit. Can I find anything about iOS compatibility though? Hell no!
Anyone here have relevant experience with the M-Audio or have another recommendation?
Thanks

I recently got an Audient ID14 MKII and really love it. It was a noticeable step up for me from my previous Scarlett 2i2. I had narrowed it down to that and Universal Audio Volt 4. You'll need more ports so another model could work for you. I believe Volt has MIDI interface, not sure about the other models Audient offers. I got a great price on the ID14 on Thomannmusic (US). I believe both work well on iPad and though I have an iPad, I've never used it directly so can't comment on that.
I'm looking to try the Antelope Zen Quadro.
Top quality, and the possibility to connect two devices
TX-6
Behringer 1820 works with iOS.
You can plug a USB-c to USB B cable into it without adapters.
It has ADAT in so you can use a separate mi-pre box with ADAT out if you want more ins/out or better quality pre amps.
It’s Behringer. So it’s cheap. And it works. Audio+MIDI.

I also have this audio interface with the Behringer ADA-8000 and the Expert Sleepers ES-8 module.
The ADA-8000 for the extra ins and the Expert Sleepers for Eurorack CV out.
It's solid.
I would get a Scarlett with 2x the inputs and outputs I need now. The 4th gen 16i16 is the next one I'll buy.
I have my eye on the Zoom Livetrak series for this, price isn’t much different to a pure interface but you also get hands-on (monitor) mixing and standalone recording. Tascam Model series also. With multi-input interfaces you need to be careful that they’ll work without (at least) every session re-configuration using a computer (for software monitoring) and not many have iOS apps to control hardware monitoring (MOTU UltraLite mk5 does - but costs more than the mixers mentioned above).
Getting a smaller, lighter cheaper interface that’s class compliant and a separate 8 in ADAT like the Focusrite Scarlett Ocotpre makes sense to me.
This makes the most expensive part pretty much future proof and means you can have a small rack permanently wired up how you like it.
You then have a separate, portable interface for other tasks when you want the iPad to be portable.
You can then upgrade the main interface in the future much more easily and as long ad it has an ADAT input you never lose your pres, which is where it’s more sensible putting your money. IMVHO.
Me too. Zoom L6.
Another one I'm eyeing at is the "obsolete" but fairly compact Line 6 Sonic Port VX with direct connection to the Lightning port.
@rs2000 i have the sonicport vx and its great, works well with ipad.
This!
Best purchase I’ve ever made
It is awesome for what it does.
Thanks, I've just received mine and I like it!
Thanks for the replies, I think it’s just made deciding harder😂
I’d love to have the justification (to myself) to buy a TX-6, it looks amazing
@klownshed’s idea of smaller, cheaper interface with ADAT is genius and has a lot going for it.
Nearly pulled the trigger on a Zoom L6 but there’s no Hi-Z inputs and I really need those
Always been a bit shy of Behringer due to their reputation of poor build quality and thieving designs but I think the 1820 has everything I need.
I’m disappointed how little iOS gets mentioned on the manufacturer websites. I checked several out by Roland, Focusrite (mainly disappointed by the software editors not being available for iOS), M-Audio and others and either had to hunt elsewhere for the info or could find nothing.
I have a used iconnect 2+ and its really good for iPad. Would you consider used market?
@MistaG Aren't 39k high enough? What you you want to connect?
In terms of iOS compatibility, I'm used to just search for "class compliant" (including multichannel i/o).
Sorry, I’m not the most informed on this stuff..39k? Is that impedance? I only “know” I need a hi-z for electric guitars and basses. Happy to learn something new if 39k covers that. I’m looking to connect electric guitar, bass, synths. Have a preamp already that I use for mic but if they’re good I’ll probably end up using what’s built into the interface.
I am considering used. The only issue I have with the iconnect 2+ is I’m looking for at least 8ins and 4 outs. All the other features would make it perfect otherwise
Oh I have that mixer. The M-Audio one. It worked well for my uses. I mostly use it for live gigs.
My iOS setup is the Zoom-U44 with the EXH-6 extension. Love the fact that it is also battery powered, in addition to USB powered, so I don’t need to find a power supply to use it with my guitar or my iOS setup.
Don’t buy stuff new. Literally call your music store and ask if they have the interface used. That’s how I got mine half price.
Yes, impedance.
The instrument inputs on channels 1 and 2 have non-XLR inputs meant to be used with guitars, basses etc.
Thanks, going to look at it it again. Appreciate your time for the reply
I was gonna also say the TX-6, but the only reason I didn’t was for the MIDI …
But TX-6!!
I had a TX-6 as well, but it turned out my whole setup was too complicated for the iPad. There were too many issues with connecting so much hardware to an iPad as the center. So the 12 inputs of the TX-6 might be overkill for a mobile setup.
The TX-6 has some cool features, but you will not be able to use them all in audio interface mode. And it also lacks in the midi department, its clock was unstable and using it as a midi controller is also problematic, because it has only one midi channel and the knobs are mapped hardcoded, you don't map the function (like in the OP-Z) but the physical knobs themselves which makes it pretty limited.
So my general suggestion to anyone playing with the idea of getting a TX-6, is to rethink the whole concept again and maybe use the iPad with less hardware, for example as an alternative setup. This way you can focus more on the iPad. It has more possibilities than any gear you could buy anyway.
To me the OP-Z is the perfect companion to the iPad, because you get an interface, a mic, the option to use 2 more devices via line module and DigDugDIY OP-Z TRRS Splitter. The monitor mode of the OP-Z allows processing the OP-Z Sounds in the iPad and feed everything back to the main output. In addition, it is also a nice midi controller and sequencer.
And if you would like to integrate the iPad to a mac, just get an Audio4c or use Siderack for this.
Just my 2 cents where I am at the moment. Maybe it helps someone.
Great points honestly - I agree with you on the op-z…sorta wish I got the line while they were still in production but oh well…maybe they’ll make some more with the “op-z field” or “ep-z”)

What about this^^^^???
That looks like it has most of what you are looking for?? I might be wrong , I’m not the most technical guy here but did anyone mention that one?
PS (if @klownshed said to look at something it’s def worth a look too imo; dude knows his hardware and gear, anyway take his advice over mine lmao)
@axens - thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. Many a valid point there dealing with the TX-6 vs the OP-Z I’m sure.
My iPad sits next to my iMac when I’m doing music and I prefer the iPad every time. Yea it’s still, after all these years, littered with shortcomings, work-arounds and frustrations but there’s something about being able to grab the chunks of audio or sequences (mainly using Cubasis atm) and arrange them. I prefer sliders or rotary controls on a touch screen to using a mouse (better still are real knobs, hence why I still have some hardware synths). Then of course there’s the portability of iPads.
I just want to leave everything plugged into an interface so when I plug the USB from the iPad into it, I’m ready to go.
I don’t need a mixing desk anymore, I can do all that in the box so I want to get rid of mine and save some space and have one less place for dust to accumulate. I do have a bit of outboard fx still so a spare out will go to them.
It’s all subjective and down to personal preferences and workflows so no “right” just “right for me/you/etc”. Thanks again for the input though, I love discussing these things and if there’s one thing I am good at it’s procrastinating. I’m better at talking about making music than actually making music!
Have you considered the Presonus quantum hd . I’ve no experience with it but it’s the one I am eyeing up . looks like it might fit the bill. 2 Hi Z inputs , midi i/o , and adat . USB c. . Also re-amp outputs . More importantly iOS app for control in the App Store . So definitely compatible with iPad.
