Memorials should be a celebration. We need to get past the sense of loss and trauma at the end and remember the beauty and joy of our entire journey with the beloved.

    Just happened to be what the muses sent into my head (ears, fingers) at the time, so I just decided to dedicate it to Eleanor. It was hard the last few weeks. I don't know where I'd be without the healing power of music. <3

    BTW, done entirely in the new SynthMaster 3 (except for guitars and drums), which also just happened to be something I was test driving at the time.

    I still haven't got SynthMaster 3, I'm still on SynthMaster 2.
    It's a powerful app even when starting from the presets.
    The sound palette for this track certainly made good use of SM3.
    Nicely done.

  • Sorry to hear about Eleanor. We lost our Siamese, Sushi a few years ago to cancer. I had never been a cat person, but this one was very different from any I had ever known. I always thought cats were aloof and entitled. Sushi was alway looking for a lap to sit on. She liked to sleep between us. She was with us for about 15 years. Toward the end we knew something was wrong. We took her to the vet and got the bad news. Rather than see her in pain, we called in a lady who ran a company called Peaceful Endings. She had a good life.

    I haven’t listened yet. I will when I get home.

  • I saw the link up during the show for Paul’s new app….This is a great song. Very lively with a real 80s vibe. The drums are great. I had no idea you played guitar too! That’s some of the most tasteful playing I heard on this site !! It’s got that awesome synth fusion sound to me. What guitar do you use (and what pickups)? Great solo too. Your a great player and writer Lady…

    Oh I love those Asian cats! My previous cat was one, but she was kind of one of the more aloof types. Still the love of my life. She could be sweet, but it had to be on her terms. But my brother had a Siamese mix named Ming. She was the sweetest cat I've ever known. Just the embodiment of love in the world to everyone. One of the most evolved souls I've ever encountered.

    Thanks! The guitar I used on this one is a Carvin that I had custom made for me back in the 90s. I haven't used it for a long time, but I've come back to it recently and have selected it as my guitar of choice on several projects lately. Maybe my new favorite guitar again. It's got pickups where you can split the coils, so it can produce a full range of tones from Les Paul-ish to Strat-ish, to Tele-ish. I used it on all three guitar parts in the tune, each with a different settting/sound.

    Have you ever done any looping gigs where you move through the parts to generate a groove and then solo over the results?

    Thanks. So, the way I typically work nowadays, and which was the case with this track.. I came to realized I cannot record to a click. I need something more than just a quarter note metronome. So what I typically do nowadays is start with a simple loop just to keep time, then record all the other parts to that. Then I'll go back and replace that, or parts of it, with live drumming, fills, etc. In this case on a basic Alesis kit with a Roland snare pad that I have.

    If you're talking about live looping, like Bernhoft, Beardy Man, Tim Exile, etc. (Bernhoft is my favorite.) No, I've never done that. I don't think I would be good at it. I haven't performed live since the 90s. And with live looping, there is no margin for error. Would take hours of practice to get good at that. I am strictly a composer studio, overdubbing kind of artist. I play a lot of instruments, but only well enough to get the take. After I record something, I probably couldn't play the part again without a lot of practice. Have no use for practice. I'd rather spend the precious resource of TIME working on the next project.

    Having said that, I have a lot of online friends who are into the HWJ (Hardware Jams) and EMOM (Electronic Music Open Mic) thing, particularly in the UK. Many of them have tried to encourage me to give that stuff a try, particularly my late great friend Lisa (known as Inky Da CaT). She was so encouraging and inspiring that I was almost tempted, just for her. But again, not really my jam (pardon the pun).

    I'm curious why you are even asking me about that, since I'm like the total opposite kind of artist. Is that something you do or would like to try?

    I face this challenge with looping also because
    I also am a studio composer and live musician.
    I normally play with a band when playing live so
    I don't have to think about creating the backing using loops.
    It's a different headpsace and skillset which I'm starting to learn now.

    It's like being a session musician, practice the parts to perfection and then record
    them live in one take in front of an audience without making mistakes.

    Some of the stuff on Soundcloud exists only there. Some of the Soundcloud titles are duplicated on Bandcamp. In that case, the Bandcamp version is generally the a more updated, superior mix. Nowadays I tend to use Soundcloud only for shorter more casual things.

    Everything is a single, and often it varies wildly from one project to the next in terms of genre/style, etc.

    The thing I like about Bernhoft is that it's a good song regardless of the live looping gimmick aspect. (However, this was a long time ago. I don't think he does the live looping thing anymore):

    Thanks! Yes, I hope that people won't be put off by the memorial aspect and focus on the celebration aspect. I hope people won't see it and not listen thinking it's going to be sad or depressing. It's just a piece of music I decided to dedicate to a cat!

    If I want to see a thread continue and not float off the front page then I will end with a question or two.

    Live looping is the last resort of the single performer to conjure up a band, Usually because they need live performances to generate income, I suspect. One player Studio Creations is also a skillset that many don’t have.
