Why can't I access my photos?
Hi ipad users, a non-music ipad question:
The other day I sat in my local library with the intention of working on some album artwork for a forthcoming release. I got out my Apple pencil, opened the ipad and started importing a few recent photos into Procreate. Then I went to grab a few more, and they wouldn't open in Procreate.
My assumption is that this is something to do with not being online, and the photos being on some irritating cloud (?) But if there's a photo in my "Photos" app, then why can't I access it?
And how can I ensure that, in the future, when I'm working offline, everything on my ipad is there for me to use?
Which would be helpful,...wouldn't it Apple? Hmm?

The photos app will offload images to free up space on the iPad. The photos you can see in the camera roll are just thumbnails. If I’m heading off somewhere without internet access to do art stuff, I make sure I open the images I’ll be using to make sure they are downloaded beforehand. Or use phone tethering to grab them.
Edit to add: It all depends on how old the picture is and how much free space you have on the device. More recent photos are prioritised to stay on the device and the less space you have the sooner it will start offloading those images.
Also, you can change this behaviour in the system settings. You should find it in the iCloud settings. You could end up running out of space a lot sooner though if you opt for keeping the full size images on the device.
Ok, cool, thanks Tom @FordTimeLord !
In "ipad storage" it says 115 gb of 128 used, so not sure why it has offloaded these images to the cloud....
Anyway, now I understand - thanks for helpful response, as always
And when you say you "open the images I'll be using". do you simply mean that opening them in the photos app and then closing it again will cause those pics to be available? Or do you mean you open them by dragging into the relevant app like Procreate or whatever?
No worries mate. Not sure if I’m reading that right but it sounds like you only have 3GB* of space left which isn’t as much as it sounds. I used to have this problem with my old 128gb iPad a lot. Storage was always a struggle.
It’s been a while since I’ve had to do it as I have a bit more storage now but iirc I imported the images I wanted to use into procreate, affinity or whatever app I was using at the time. You can also just set up a folder under ‘on my iPad’ and save the images you want to use there.
I think that Apple do this for two reasons:
1. To sell you more iCloud storage
2. To make your photos available on all your iPhones. iPads and Macbooks, of which you hopefully own plenty
I find creating a folder on your iPad of items you work with is a pretty handy way to go. This way you guarantee you have access to the files you want and it has the added bonus of assisting in keeping things nicely organised. The iCloud saving process can sometimes get in the way a bit as files synchronise.
Thanks all, appreciate your input
