Yosemite includes a free digital audio interface for iOS... sorta

So this is a cool trick that could help get a couple channels of digital audio routed into your Mac. Its not going to help you play along with a DAW from an iPad, but it could definitely have its uses.

1) Open QuickTime Player on your Mac while plugged in via USB
2 Select "New Movie" from the File menu.
3) Select your iOS device for both the audio source.
4) Open System Prefs, Sound panel, select system output to Soundflower (install if you don't have)
5) Open DAW app of your choice and select input as Soundflower

I'm still working on how to monitor this well. There's a good deal of latency in the process.

  • I was going to try that with Soundflower until Abelton played nicely with Sound Injector on my macbook pro. Is latency caused by soundflower? I always thought it was fairly small.
