WretchUp - New App from Mouse on Mars

edited October 2014 in General App Discussion

Looks and sounds great, but appears to be aimed towards live performance at this stage.

"Inspired by analog hardware effects, Mouse on Mars have created a unique instrument. You can use it on vocals. You can use it on drums. You can use it to transform music tracks, or playing with feedback from a speaker. You can just have fun speaking or singing into it. But whatever you do, it’s designed around the handheld. In place of a complex interface, the focus is on a broad range of sound possibilities and quick exploration beneath your fingers. You can concentrate on listening and experimentation, as the app produces a range of sounds, fast."

Website says a drum synth/sequencer is coming too. http://www.mouseonmars.com/mominstruments/

  • I really like this. Great fun on my phone. Loads to tweak. Just tried with my voice.

    Can see lots of potential.

I wonder how I can get anything out of it (short of an analog lead into my Mac book)? Or into it?

  • Mouse on Mars are my favorite group, and I've been looking forward to this, and especially the upcoming drum machine. I'm guessing WretchUp doesn't have AB or IAA?

  • No AB or IAA and I couldn't see an email address to ask the question on their website.

  • I bought the app after posting here. Great little sound mangler and looper. The developer has a Facebook page, and I asked about AB and IAA there.

  • Superb, this would be fantastic on AB, of limited use for me with just the mic input though.

  • Agreed. I'd normally skip most apps without AB because of limited practical use, but I've been interested in this since it was announced. I get that the aesthetic was for a primarily live app, but still, no Dropbox or Audioshare leaves it limited.

Still lots of fun tho. I've been grabbing samples while I watch horror movies and loving the weird noise you can create.

I'll probably still get it - I love Mouse on Mars and this sort of effect is definitely my cup of tea, and I guess I can run it straight into Logic. So much more fun as an AB effect mangling up Thor or Oscilab though...

  • Given the output is likely to sound lo fi anyway... i'm thinking about just plugging my Apogee iMic in and recording apps from my speakers, into this running on my iPhone.

Then I've got to figure out how to get it back out of Wretchup. iPhone headphone socket into my MacBook I guess. Bit of a royal pain though...

Can anyone recommend something AB compatible that can do something similar to vocal samples etc? Filtatron maybe (which I have but haven't really explored). I'm thinking Nils too?

Glitch 1 just got an update. AB and AudioCopy. Very nice manipulation tool.

  • @thinds thanks, that does look good. I notice CSGrain has an update too so I might investigate that one.

  • so glitch one records it's glitching, so you can then copy/ paste what you did into other apps?

  • Finally got a reply to my post on the Facebook page: Audiobus and IAA are in the works:

"Yes, definitely. Audiobus first, IAA second - backers will get that version for testing. We're finishing Audiobus now. It will allow the use of WretchUp both as a source and a filter."

  • Great news and will buy it now then. Thanks

  • Not sure if you all have seen this video posted yesterday: http://www.factmag.com/2014/10/27/to-celebrate-21-years-as-a-group-we-got-mouse-on-mars-to-make-a-21-track-album-live-in-21-minutes-for-fact-tv/

In addition to WretchUp, you can see them using their upcoming Elastic Drums app, but there are a number of other apps they use as well. I recognize Bebot, but what about the other apps? More custom apps that they may be releasing in the future?

  • After five minutes of that I started clicking through it, I saw TweakyBeat in there.

  • Turnado was used but not on an iPad. Mouse on Mars is one of the best live acts I've ever seen.

  • Just a note that WretchUp is now on the Bus. Much more useful now, IMO.

  • Ooh lovely, it says 'basic support' for AB - has anyone tested it? I notice it's not on the AB list yet, wondering how it works and if it fits in the effects slot. Also says it's compatible with iPad but can't see it on the iPad store. Really want this one....

  • Basic? Pretty good for basic. It can be an input and an FX!!

  • Yeah, I had a go with it before I posted about the AB update. It works in the input, effects, and output slots, tho I just used it as an effect with Animoog and Stroke Machine. The iTunes Store link in the first post in this thread will take you there, although you can also set your search for "iPhone only" to find it in the store.

I'm not sure what they mean by basic support in AB, probably just no state saving, which would be useless with this app anyhow. The one thing I'd like to see is the ability for it to pass audio through unaffected when you're not directly using the app-you can turn it off, but otherwise you have to lock the mic input. Makes using the looper particularly difficult. It's a minor complaint that I've already messaged the developer about, so hopefully it gets fixed in a future update.

It's only in the iPhone listings at present

  • Thanks, just bought it and downloaded onto my ipad. Works great, completely bonkers....just my cup of tea!

  • I'll be doing a pre-release for Elastic Drums very soon

  • Just did a track with Wretchup with the idea of posting it on here, but decided against it as it's a godawful racket, even by my low standards. It does seem to enjoy changing pitch, even without touching any controls so results are weird at best, unlistenable at worst.

Not that I'm disappointed, on the contrary it's doing exactly what I expected, works well on my old ipad2 and will live quite happily in my strange, noisy music universe. Can see those that make proper music bing a bit perplexed though.

  • I used it last night as an effect on some rap vocals, then chained into VoiceJam.

It is interesting in that it changes pitch radically without altering length. At the extremes it produces some interesting transistor radio sounds.

It appears to have a semi random tape wobble that you can never turn off - which I think is what you were experiencing @monzo.

It's good for a certain job though... weird warped randomness.

  • Yeah...I think my problem is that the stuff I put into it is pretty weird already...
