Logic Pro still get stuck notes

edited October 2024 in Logic Pro

I’ve just come back to music making after quite a long break, and whenever I use logic I seem to get stuck notes if I move the play head around whilst a song is playing. I think this has always happened but I was hoping it wouldn’t be by now.

I’ve tried double tapping the stop button and the midi monitor area but it does seem to work. Then when I hit play again, there’s the stuck notes playing again. The play head is nowhere near the notes so I just don’t get what’s happening.

The only way to stop them is to close the project and open again which is such a buzzkill.

Am I missing something?

  • Can you record it happening and post a YouTube of it here? Might help someone see what’s going on. I use Logic on my 5th gen Air with the latest OS nearly every day and I’ve only had stuck notes using AUv3s that I know are problematic and then about twice in the last few months. Most apps that mess Logic up also mess other DAWs for me and Logic seems to close problematic apps down without issue mostly in my experience.

Hope you can find a culprit behind this issue, as I know how frustrating it can be when you get seemingly unexplainable issues.

One thing I will add, is that I freeze tracks up regularly and keep a careful eye on the processor load meter. Keeping processor load low definitely helps keep issues low - again that’s just my experience.

It may not be stuck notes then. Maybe it’s something else that isn’t being told to stop when it should. In this particular song it’s a ButterSynth track that it’s happening with that has quite long notes triggering the arpeggiator, so maybe it’s that particular combination.

I’ve 100% had it before with other tracks though which has made me assume it’s an LP problem. although I can’t remember if it’s always ButterSynth or not. I’ll see if I can narrow it down further and make a single track example, and look at making a video of it happening.

    Thanks for replying.

Just had it happen. I was using an arp sound on Synthmaster2 with the loop function on in Logic and I got stuck notes. Thinking back, I may have had this happen before with SM2 in another iOS DAW - possibly. I have trouble remembering things due to my headaches, so I may be wrong, but I have felt that SM2 is a bit unstable at times. It is an app that I usually freeze as quickly as possible.

Have you tried double-tapping the Stop button? That should kill any MIDI notes.

Yes, first thing I did. I can't replicate the problem. I've only had it happen 3 times in months, so it's not a major issue for me, but it was so bizarre that it should happen just after I replied to the OP on here lol.

And just to add, I've probably used Logic most days before I've even had breakfast!

Did you get anywhere with this? I’m back making music after a break, and I’m making a track with Twin 3 in. I’m using the arp in twin 3, and if I move the LP playhead when it’s playing I then get stuck notes. Doesn’t matter if I turn off the arp in twin - the note continues just without the arp. Even bypassing Twin 3 or turning the track off, it continues playing. Only thing that stops it is a project reset.

I'd suggest reporting it to FabFilter as it's most likely related to the way Twin 3 deals with host transport (I've gotten stuck notes in other hosts as well).

    Thanks! Will do.

I always wondered why some synths had panic buttons which I never used. Now I wish they all had one! 😄

On a similar topic I wish all synths responded to the 'All Notes Off' messages the hosts send them :D
Some synths even fail to support the two methods of sending notes off (Note Velocity 0 & Note Off).

Yes, exactly! Is that what logic does when you double tap the midi monitor bit?

Have you ever reported this to fabfilter? Are their support responsive?

Yes, via e-mail long time ago (they usually reply within a day or two) and they told me they'd look into it back then but no updates have popped up as far as I know. So far I've reached out 3 times on various issues and they've replied but the eventual fixes have never popped up in the AppStore. Doesn't hurt to try though...

LogicPro for iPad's double-tap on the midi-monitor is a bit hit or miss, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
There's no stop button to double tap like in the Mac version of Logic.

I'd also suggest sending Apple some feedback too so they stop slacking around when it comes to updating LogicPro for iPad...

    Cheers!
