Oddly Enough - Logic session players and a StaffPad solo
Some time ago @JanKun started teasing me about how good the strings instruments are in StaffPad compared to other libraries and I never listened to him. Turns out he was absolutely right! So I bought it and started playing with it, especially with the cellos.
This is the first composition I did and I decided to go all in on Logic letting him do piano and synths with the session players, then a bit of Patterning 3 for the drums and the Tina Guo StaffPad IAP for the cello solo (the other "lo-fi" strings are from a Decent Sampler library).

It is such a beautiful and delicate piece of work. Surprised it doesn't get the attention it deserves.
It is a stunning first time using Staffpad. The cello integrates so well with the rest of the track and is so expressive. It is stellar.
I haven't used solo strings in my arrangements yet, but I guess the Tina Guo and the other solo strings from Cinesamples are on my shopping list for this year's black Friday.
@McD ! You might be interested to hear what @unlink has been able to achieve on his first attempt !
Yes its fantastic.
Whats the workflow to achieve this?
Really lovely piece. The cello sounds great and it works well with the piano and percussion and I like the bit-crushed atmospherics in the background which add a bit of contrast. The Logic Piano is really nice too, fits the piece perfectly without sounding artificial. Good stuff. Staffpad is obviously great when in the right hands
Oh man I completely missed this post - I commented on SoundCloud but I didn't realise you had posted it here.
This absolutely gorgeous, the Session Players are very tastefully integrated, but the star of the show is that cello. The tone is beautiful and the part is full of longing and melancholy. It's a really beautiful and evocative composition.
Missed it, too. Very beautiful and sensitive. Agree that the strings are #1. Good goin’, bro.
Thank you very much @JanKun @klownshed @richardyot @LinearLineman 🙏
@dblonde workflow is personal, but what most seem to do is to start structuring the song in some DAW like Logic, then export the whole song and import in StaffPad, lay down your strings, export StaffPad and import it back in Logic. It’s easier to do than to write it actually 😁 you just need to get used a bit to the classic music notation (no need to be the new Beethoven, really).
Beautiful and emotional composition. The cello sounds great. The vibrato sounds so natural. I can picture the soloist with their eyes closed. If this is your first time, you really succeeded. Nice work… or play, depending on how you see it.
Mixing the literal studio orchestral instruments with the Logic Pro "session players" makes this work a real standout
when compared with all the pure StaffPad work I find. I think this is an excellent workflow to mine. The harmony and melodic
choices are outstanding... very much like the music of @Linearlineman for voiding cliches and overly mined territory.
This project would make an excellent film score example.
@McD thx for the nice comparison with the OP. I must’ve asked this about Staffpad, but, these days, I often confuse yesterday with two days ago. Can you play notes into Staffpad or must they be written?
@unlink thank you great piece
The last update added MIDI input for "realtime" Notation. I uses a metronome/click sound. The resulting notation is often
overly complex... it generates mathematically strict notation. It also seems a bit buggy: adding or dropping notes.
Thx @McD
Thank you very much @McD and @Paulieworld
I love the ending! 😅
Because I can’t wait to play it again! Superb piece! 🤩 I love your newest compositions. Bravo!
What a gorgeous piece - a truly beautiful melody running throughout. Understated use of the session guys means it retains that fully authentic feel. Lovely
Thanks a lot @Luxthor @BillS 😊
Lovely piece of music 🙏
Great score, indeed!
Thank you very much @GeoTony and @Pxlhg !
Gosh, this is beautiful to listen. Very nice. And yes those strings do sound amazing. That does it, I’m finally gonna grab staffpad!
Thank you! And yes, grab it, the libraries are just wonderful.
