iOS8 and all the apps...

I'm really confused by all this, like a lot of others. Simple question, probably a tricky answer...

When iOS8 and audio finally stabilise will all the audio apps need a further update to be compatible? Or are the current efforts to solve the issues going to make things compatible with the specs the devs are already working to?

    Now I'm confused, too.

iOS 8 audio doesn't just *stabilise. It's not a pendulum or something. iOS is made by people. Audio apps are made by people. People make mistakes. In software these mistakes are called 'bugs'.

There are bugs in iOS and there are bugs in apps.

A change in the way iOS works required Audiobus to change the way it manages communication between apps for iOS 8 and that required ALL apps to update to the latest Audiobus SDK, which is a part of the whole Audiobus system that runs in all compatible apps.

All apps in this list: http://audiob.us/ios8 have already been update to run the latest major version Audiobus SDK which means you can use them on iOS 8.

But there are still bugs in iOS, third party apps and Audiobus itself that will most likely be ironed out over time.
There was never and there will never be a point in time where iOS or third party apps (including Audiobus) will be completely bug free. It's really just a question of how many bugs you can live with and the latest iOS 8.1 update has made things a lot better because it did away (mostly) with a bug that caused problems on devices having a 3G/4G chip in them.

  • @Sebastian

Apologies if my language was a bit loose. I get what you mean about the pendulum. Where I was coming from is there was a big effort to be ready for iOS8 and an expectation that once all the devs had caught up with the change things would roll on as they did before. That effort seems have started quite a few months ago.

There is now a continued effort to deal with the remaining problems. I'm wondering if the troubles are so deep that the devs will all need to go back and update specifically to bring them in line with the fixes or if the fixes will solve problems in a way that will work with the current version of the apps. I guess on one level we will only know when we know.

  • Devs constantly have to work fixing bugs. There might be a few more bugs right now but for developers this isn't quite so different from other iOS updates in the last years.

  • Ok, cheers. I've only been on iOS a few months so I don't have an experience of previous upgrades to compare.

At the moment everything is reasonably stable for me on 7.1.2 because I haven't been updating. However, now we are seeing apps upgrading with additional functionality, rather than just iOS8 compatibility I'm gauging the risk of jumping in.

7.1.2 was out when I got my iPad and everything seemed in a pretty good place by then. So I'm guessing a similar length of time from initial release is to be expected here.

  • Yeah. Just wait. It's not like iOS 8 is a vast improvement over iOS 7 feature wise.
