AUV3 Midi and audio arranger?

edited October 2024 in General App Discussion

I have in mind an ideal (for me) app that could be loaded in AUM, and not need to be a standalone host itself, like any of the big DAWs.

It would provide recording and arrangement of both MIDI and audio tracks in the same app. So rather than using the 4pockets recorder for audio, and maybe Atom for MIDI, I could do it all in one, so I can see and work with the entire arrangement.

It’s idiosyncratic, I know. And I can’t think of such a thing. Is there one?

I know LP is getting Midi soon… but it’s not also an arranger, is it?
(Edit: Hmm. I see that it is. The clip timeline. Maybe this is it. Come oooooon, Midi.)

Or is this yet another one of those “Drambo does this” things.

A DAW without being a DAW. Hmmm. ;)

Only the host has direct access to audio and MIDI ports.

When the MIDI update comes out, I would do this in Loopy as a standalone rather than hosted...it will both be simpler but there are a lot of benefits to using LP as your host (actions to change presets and parameter values, being able to customize the workspace with useful buttons, sliders and knobs and more.

AUM in conjunction with several apps can be used to trigger audio clips and “sequence” midi and audio. For example you can use midi to trigger one shots or clips in Koala. Check out EGNodes which does exactly what you describe as well as stand alone and AU.

Unfortunately EG Nodes can't work with audio samples in the AUv3. It's midi only.
I put in a feature request for it to work with audio as well. Upvote if you like. 👍🏼

  • Thanks @wim @rs2000 @espiegel123 @audiblevideo for taking the time to give thought and feedback.

It is kind of silly, I know, and even paradoxical.
I do use Nodes. I’ll upvote that request, though as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I’m beginning to worry about abandonment of that app.
LP with Midi really may wind up being the most comfortable working solution.

I guess for the moment my concern might be less about doing both in the same app… which, as you’ve pointed out, really is just a DAW (I just wish that the existing ones weren’t so cumbersome and kitchen-sinky). I’d be quite happy with just a good arranger that can work in AUM. I’ve used Atom a lot in this way, setting up the clips and launching them with other controls. And helium seems to be useful in a similar way. But I really would like that linear, segmented song arranger you always get in a DAW, and I can’t think of one.

Maybe LK is the closest I can get right now. I seem to recall having some real difficulty with it in the past.
If Xequence were AU it would be perfect.

    Xequence doesn't do audio though.

Right. And I’ve decided that’s ok for now. Really most interested in arranging.

  • Well @garden since audio isn’t your top priority now then l I’ll vote for Xequence without hesitation. I was quite worried about the lack of Auv3 but honestly it hasn’t bothered me at all. Setting up midi channels between it and other apps has been a breeze and it’s mind blowing how powerful it is.

  • Xequence 2 can also be used to trigger audio in AUM. You must need to create an "instrument" track to send to AUM's MIDI control system, then map notes to start and stop audio player nodes. Place patterns in the timeline where you want the audio to play and put the note messages in them to trigger the audio node. You can give those clips names to indicate which audio clips are playing. All your automation of volume, etc, can go in Xequence as well.

You can use LK + Loopy Pro multi-out AUs in AUM. Midi from LK. Audio in LoopyPro. Each LoopyPro multi-out instance is used as the audio effects processor for each AUM track. You can create a multi-track template for LoopyPro and use it in different projects.

I have tried this in the past because....why not?

  • Hi,

I use xequence2 and its good, but no tempo changing or mixed time signatures . but for straight up edm, dance music, etc, it works great.
