Yamaha UD-BT01 - share your experience

hello!
anyone uses Yamaha UD-BT01 with iOS devices and midi controllers!?
(Bluetooth wireless MIDI adapter)
seems a good alternative for hub.

I have some questions:
how good is it working?!
low latency!?
does it work ok with ANY midi controller!?
( I dont plan to use keybboards, just some midi controllers with sliders and knobs)

thank you!

I have used the Yamaha UD-BT01 with a midi foot controller and my iPad and it works great. The midi controller needs to have a usb-b port (or the proper adapter), since the cable goes usb-b to usb-a. Then I used a simple usb-a dongle to power the BT01. I didn’t notice any latency issues whatsoever. The trick with iPad and the BT01 is it needs a “liaison app” in order for the iPad to recognize it at first. I remember using an app called Midimittr. Once it introduced the BT01 to my iPad the first time, it was a set and forget and I didn’t need to open Midimittr again. The BT01 was just always available in the Bluetooth devices list.

  • I love it.

Had it for over 4 years and it’s saved me at times where I forget to bring my dongle.

Somebody putting it through the wringer will have issues with it, especially super fast piano players. But for most of us, it is excellent. I’m not a classical pianist, but I play for gigs, and it’s awesome.

I have one connected to an Expressive E Touché USB now and it works well.
I had a Launchpad Mini connected before and latency was fairly good imo. but I haven't measured it.

Works both from a USB power supply as well as a USB power bank.

So far it seems that it works with any class compliant USB MIDI device.

  • big thank you!
you all helped. I just ordered one...
such a good forum with good people. (most of the times:)

  • I think I remember someone saying a long time ago that the BT01 doesn't transmit sysex message. I've been wondering if anyone can confirm or deny that is the case currently.

  • wim:
I just need my faderfox uc-4 and some other normal controllers to work well...:)
    no sysex needed...

I figured that, but inquiring minds want to know. 😉

  • wim:
if you want to be sure
    this does transmit EVERYTHING!
    CME WIDI Uhost

a comparision of Uhost and this Yamaha dongle
would be really good to see...:)

    MD-BT01 or UD-BT01?

  • @waka_x When you get the ud bt01 you can update the firmware with an iphone app. Do this while powering the unit with an adapter. Using a powerbank might interrupt the power during the update...
I like this yamaha bluetooth midi unit. It gives a stable connection also with older ios versions.
Something the cme widi host had more problems with.

  • ha!
    thank you @Alfred
    really good tip

    Sorry, I don't remember.

  • Both of those Yamaha BLE devices (still) work for me, though I tend to use CME devices now because of their advanced features and performance.

please explain what do you mean by
    "advanced features and performance."
    thank you

They run BLE 5.x vs the Yamaha’s 4.2

Also, they can auto connect to the first device they see - I use that to connect a Korg NanoKey Studio directly to a Roland MC-101…

    Sorry, I don't remember.

My MD-BT01 worked with sysex messaging although it really depends on the transmission speed used by the device as well as size, as with MPE it works but not always reliably.

I’ve several Midi Bluetooth dongles, all seem to be about the same in this regard but I’d probably rate CME’s the most reliable.

  • Regarding MD-BT01, it doesn't seem to work with Boss Tone Studio app, so it may have an issue with large sysex transfers (thanks Boss!), or maybe the fault lies in BTS.
