What is your go-to synth for bass?

I've been working on dialing in my bass sounds and wondering what is everyone's favorite?

Currently I'm rolling with Twin 3, but Dagger sounds pretty nice as well.

I really like being able to use the mod wheel or aftertouch for vibrato and I appreciate how easy that is to setup in Twin 3. With some synths, it's not really possible, even though they have great bass sounds.

  • I’ve been using King of Bass for a while now

  • For a quick bass, I love Lowtone. However, I like to layer bass sounds. A mid bass with the low end slightly shaved off to make room for the sub bass, and a sub bass ran through some sort of distortion/saturator/etc.

  • My most recent go to’s have been Moog Model 15, Moog Mariana, and Bassilicious 1 and 2, and Syntronik (if including synth romplers). Have also used Toneboosters Lowtones, and Kai Aras Shockwave but they take longer to dial in and sometimes need layering to fill out the sound.

Interesting - thanks for the tip.

Of course mate. I usually do this bass layering in Obsidian in NS2.

  • Model D (classic), Model 15 (best sounding synth on iOS to my ears, that’s what I use when I have time to fine tune and experiment) and Dagger (super fast, all controls literally on one screen and sublime filters)

  • I’ve actually been using TAL-U-NO-LX and customizing my own basses (on desktop). The results on rock tracks have been quite good. Better than I had hoped.

  • At the moment I'm using two of the Logic Bass Players often reinforced with Moog Marianna, Lowtone or a Synthmaster 2 arp sequence. I very rarely use one bass sound now. I mostly use two and sometimes three!

Having two bass lines the same that then split to playing different bass lines at points in the song works for me. I've always loved the idea of two drummers, vocalists or bassist playing off each other.

  • Troublemaker…

    Good choices.

Hard to beat that distinctive 303-like sound for Acid House, Techno, and anywhere else you want to use Troublemaker. Don't forget your 808 and 909 drums. ;)

  • Just made a great sub rumble with BlibBox.

  • I love Moog Model D for bass, but I have found great success also with Suger Bytes Unique, which has some great bass sounds with a lot of character. If you go with Unique, get the iPhone version, as it's not universal, but iPhone version has the identical sound engine and presets as iPad version, just less expensive and works on both iPhone/iPad ($4.99 vs $19.99 for iPad full unlock).

For traditional bass guitar sounds, IMO, there’s not much better than those Bassalicious 2 sounds.

Beathawk also has their Total Bass pack which also has some realistic acoustic bass samples.

    Now synth bass?

Drambo or Dagger all the way!

  • At the moment my lower bass parts are either twin3 or Moog Mariana. I’m using Animoog Z a lot for higher bass parts. sometimes I layer this an an arp that starts around that or using the same patch bit played higher as a pad.

I was lucky! My first 2 iOS synths were Model D and Model 15. I got them for free on Bob Moog’s birthday before i fell down the iOS rabbit hole.

  • Agnonizer numerical audio -- but almost always layered if its not one of the the wubby presets. auGen is great for subs.

  • Buttersynth

  • Beepstreet Dagger for more dirt, Yonac Kauldron for bread and butter synth bass.
