  • As a long time Pixelmator user I'm happy that the developers have found a new 'home' :sunglasses:

  • NS2 is next!!!

  • Ah, sorry. I missed your thread when I posted mine.

  • I had version one on OSX, good stuff.

  • I’m a huge Pixelmator fan and I do have my concerns 😰 I hope Pixelmator just stays what it is. No subscription, no decrease in development, no discontinuation. Aiaiai…

  • It’s already subscription based unless you bought it befit and grandfathered in

I’m kinda sad they were acquired by Apple. I use Photomator on iOS and iPadOS. I use Pixelmator Pro on desktop and the original Pixelmator on iOS and iPadOS for compositing.

I like how it integrates with Final Cut on desktop.

I think Apple will slow and ruin development :(

Well, we don't know what they're going to do, but considering Pixelmator has been moving into generative fill and things like that, I suspect that's why Apple decided to finally buy them. I have no real opinion on whether this is good or bad for Pixelmator until something changes.

    Really? I’d missed that. Damn.

As far as I know iOS Photomator offers subscription (and also offers a on-time payment) while Pixelmator Pro is still a regular paid Mac app which I bought a few years back.

Should Apple revive Aperture (which I also bought way back) I'd be super happy :sunglasses:

Oh yes, that’s true. They do now offer a one-time “lifetime” license but I wonder if all bets are off if there’s an acquisition?

I didn’t buy the Photomator desktop license. I wonder if I should while I still can? Or wait and see what Apple does with it? My guess is that Apple would kill that one-time lifetime option if the acquisition goes through. What do you think?

  • Yep only Photomator is subscription based. Pixelmator isn’t.

Currently I only have and use Pixelmator Pro together with Photos.app (the integration is really well done) and keep the photo-library on an external drive.

What I think will happen is that initially some of the AI stuff in Pixelmator Pro will be adopted into the Photos.app (As an example the 'ML Enhance' in Pixelmator Pro beats the crap out of Apples 'Magic Wand' by an insanely large margin).

I would NOT be at all surprised if Apple drops the price of Photomator and eventually makes it a rebranded replacement for the Photos.app which mildly put needs a bit of work...

The developers behind Pixelmator are happy and happy developers usually create even better products :sunglasses:

I love Pixelmator Pro’s ML uprez. I love all there apps. I know Photoshop going back to v1. But the Pixel/Photomator apps made editing images fun again for me. Photoshop got so bloated that I didn’t enjoy it all eventually.

Pixelmator Pro actually also has some decent video editing functionality as well. I was hoping we’d get more of that.

I don’t really need Photomator on desktop and its lifetime license is still $79 for legacy users. Can’t decide if I should grab it while I still can, or hold off and see what shakes out. I know you’re like me and don’t throw money around unless you have to and it’s a great value.

I bought the lifetime license for Photomator even though I’d already been grandatheted in on the iOS version as I really wanted the Mac version as an aperture alternative. I don’t want all my old aperture library photos in iCloud Photos — and Photomator works on files as well as iCloud. It’s Aperture (very) lite but works well.

It’ll be interesting to see what Apple do with Photomator and Pixelmator. I hope they maintain Photomator’s ability to work as a librarian app on folders and not just iCloud Photos.

Pixelmator looks like it could have been made by Apple already. It’s a very well made app. Photomator is better than photos for edits too.

Ditto. I have other software with more features, but Pixelmator is my go-to for most image manipulation.

  • I’m an early supporter of Photomator (formerly known as Pixelmator Photo). I still haven’t bought Photomator for Mac because I was waiting for better cataloging features. Now I have a dilemma: Should I take the bonus discount and buy it, or wait to see what Apple will do with the product?

  • I think apple will make the full version free.

  • This is good news IMO, hopefully they make it a native app like Logic or FCP. Either way as someone who’s been using Pixelmator since the very beginning I’m happy it’s not going anywhere.

I just sprung for it myself. Probably dumb, but I kind of wanted to register my desire for it to remain its own app, separate from Photos

  • Mixed reaction, happy for devs, but don't want subscription.

How to get the offer above for Photomator?

    Check in the Photomator Options->License.

If you are an early supporter, you should get this dialog with an offer.

  • I think I might hold off in Photomator for macOS. I already have Pixelmator Pro for desktop with no subscription and it pretty much already does everything Photomator does and much more.

Pixelmator Pro for iPad would be nice, but the original Pixelmator for iPad is still supported and updated regularly.

I use Photomator for iOS/ipadOS all
the time, but I never wish I could use it on desktop. Pretty much covered with Pixelmator Pro for macOS.

I’ve never felt the need for Photomator on desktop so I think I might just wait and see what Apple does with it… instead of spending the $79 on a product that I don’t actually need, and one that’s about to change owners.

  • Pretty much sums up my thoughts. I’d love to see Pro come to the iPad too, it’s a little too cut down right now.

  • If I may hijack this thread with a question - does Pixelmator/Photmator have the ability to turn a picture of a sketch into a vector image? I’m having trouble finding the answer via Google. Someone on Reddit asked a year ago but got no replies.

Photomator has librarian features that Pixelmator doesn't. If you use Apple Photos as your librarian and "edit in Pixelmator" than you don't need Photomator.

Photomator works as a librarian on iCloud Photos and folders. If you don't want all your photos in the iCloud photo library it's a good choice, although much simpler in scope than Aperture was and Lightroom is.

Pixelmator and Photomator work well together.

I'm not sure what you mean by "librarian". If you mean to view and manage photo files... I still use Adobe Bridge. It's free, works well, and is regularly updated. I don't use iCloud for photos at all.

I only use Apple Photos for iPhone/iPad images.
