Listening to music with AUv3 effects, generally

Hi Loopy Pro forum!
I'm looking for a way to listen to music with the ability to chain AUv3 effects. This is probably an obscure wish, the only apps that I know can do that on macOS are Fidelia and Aural Player, and AIMP on Windows (supports VST instead).
For iPad/iPhone, there's this player:
https://apps.apple.com/ph/app/dotec-audio-aumediaplayer/id1516652633
but it's still very limited—you can't rearrange or extend the play queue.

It looks like it would be possible if there was a player app/plugin to connect to Audiobus, like the abandoned Tube AU but for local files, or the native AUAudioFilePlayer on macOS. I haven’t found any though. Popular apps like VLC, Neutron, jetAudio, Flacbox can’t do that.

This thread is very related, I thought I’d bump the issue and summarize what I know as well.

If someone happens to know any other options, please share, thanks!

  • Yah I'd love this. Don't think Apple makes it easy and they squash things when they pop up.

Oh well if you don't need to stream and storing local files is fine (missed that on my first read), you could always just host AudioShare inside of AUM. It can play consecutive files in a folder, not super robust with different playlists and all that but workable.

  • Yah streaming inside a host isn’t a simple task but def could do it if the song was screen recorded or downloaded, in audioshare as mentioned or koala or anything really

A small audio interface with loopback capability would work to pipe any output into an AUv3 host. Other than that, if you want generalized listening from the music app, or players like VLC, etc, there's no way.

On a Mac, it's fairly easy using something like Blackhole audio driver with a simple host like Hosting AU app.

Yah you could make a faux playlist in Cubasis by just having a bunch loaded sequentially in a project on the timeline. I think Audioshare folders would be the closest to a file player.

Thanks everyone! Tried this and it works, even if it's a bit expensive. AUM could probably be replaced with AudioBus?
Now if only I could have playlists in AudioShare... but this is already major, I'm glad I wrote here :)

Yes, looks like it works... :)

  • Great! AUM is really sleek though with the gestures, parametric equalizer and CPU stats, so worth it. I wish I had the dumb iPod equalizer presets too though (AUiPodEQ), but I don't see any of the Apple's native AUv3 effects in the list, maybe I'm missing something.

By the way, is it strange that I can hear a difference between playing files in AudioShare with the "measurement mode" on and off? It's like the sound is suddenly more dynamic—and the tracks I listen to naturally are loud like everything, maybe iOS applies a limiter or something...

Not weird at all. That's what measurement mode is all about. Engaging (or disengaging? I always get confused on that one) disables automatic gain control and any equalization or frequency shaping the OS applies to the sound. I believe it only affects the internal mic and speakers though.

I'm using EarPods and I feel I can hear a pretty major difference—which I wouldn't notice on loudspeaker anyway. The docs for AUM say that it's just for built-ins though, so maybe you're right. The EarPods are the Lightning ones with a DAC, so it makes sense for iOS to just send a decrypted PCM signal forward without any processing, right..?
I have the EQ and Headphone Accommodations off, and I'm not in Europe where I think Apple forces a peak headphone loudness.

It's the fifth year that I'm using an iPhone for music and I've been really unhappy with it, I kept thinking everything sounded flat, was considering having a separate player, and now I feel like that's the reason. But my ears are too casual to trust myself with these things :)

I guess if the processing is only for Apple's headphones, that's not too surprising.

  • Stuff generally sounds way, way better to us even if it's only a volume boost. I'm not saying that's the case here, but when comparing things it helps to make sure levels are the same.

  • BTW, if you're using AUM now, TB Morphit on the master output is a great thing to have. It can apply correction profiles for all kinds of headphones, including Apple earbuds.

Yup, I'm aware of that :) I don't want to make any statements, just sharing what I've noticed. Super tired of comparison listening already, so it's enough that it sounds right to me. I guess I'll just be the only weirdo in the world who listens to music through Audioshare.

I know about Morphit (is that related to autoeq.app?), but Earpods and Airpods Pro are pretty neutral sounding already, which I like. It's nice to have that option too, though.

  • You can’t use your own music on these but web audio player and Tube AU can play anything available online as an AU in a host.

Thanks! I think Tube AU is discontinued but the Web Audio Player could be useful, maybe you could even Spotify through that?

Found another app that can play local music as an auv3 (paid unlock): https://apps.apple.com/cz/app/media-assistant/id6466176223

hehe, you are not alone, my Dad does the same thing

  • @AudioGus lol. I’m always eq’ing my car stereo. But that’s just 3 bands.

@sympathyisaknife Yea I forgot about media assistant, you will need to buy an IAP I believe but that should have you covered.

Web Audio Player will play anything on the internet, Including YouTube, without video. I’ve never tried Spotify or logging into any accounts through WAP, but theoretically if it streams from the web it’s playable. I’ll have to test that with Spotify, even though I only have a free account at the moment, I’m now interested to know…

There’s also one more, but only for web radio streams, Radio AU by beepstreet.

  • After a quick test I unfortunately could not get the Spotify web player to work. Again it was a quick test, but doesn’t look like that will work with Web Audio Unit.

Dang the second tube AU was pulled too. The first one was pulled, then another developer made one, and I don’t see that one either or their other apps Radio Audio Unit, Podcast AU.

  • Yeah, not surprising that the web plugin can't pull off Spotify... would be fiddly at best anyway

Found another app that says it can play into a mixer: MusicStreamer from Stratospherix, needs paid version
    https://apple.co/2LEMkY8!
    https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/18482/musicstreamer-just-updated-with-ab-and-iaa
it's a full audio player with a library, too.

    cool! but why?? :)

Hmm, good question... I kind of forget. It may or may not allegedly have to do with YT screen recordings...? Whatever it was it was the best thing at the time for him. Could maybe introduce him to a new player, but once something works I dont want confuse things heh

Did you mean Radio Unit AU by Beepstreet? That one is still very much alive, though not really what the OP is looking for.

it's a good app. it's simple, polished, and just works. hard to not appreciate that when I discover a new iOS bug every week

In Audioshare you can chain up to 3 fx. Very straight forward. No need to launch AUM on top. You can also record the output easily. Edit: looks like fx are only inter app audio.
