Best Buy iPad 9 on sale $199 [was $329) 64 gb
Edit: I’ve caused a bit of confusion by not stating I make my stuff with an M2 iPad Pro. The old 2016 is relegated for non music making use….
Just saw this. A great deal with a headphone jack. I may splurge and retire. my old 2016 pro with its distorted speakers

64mb [edit] gb is not worthwhile for any musician no matter how low the price.
Agreed. I have the 64GB 9th gen module and quickly outgrew it - but I was using it for music AND work. Now I use that one for work related tasks and a 64GB 10th gen with USB-C for music. USB-C makes it much more convenient to interface with other music gear.
True enough. I use the ipad9 for everything but music.
Oh come on @wim that simply isn’t true. If you don’t work with sample based instruments and are selective with apps you’re absolutely fine. Drambo and Loopy, Turnado etc.
It really depends what you do and how you go about it. I only have 92gb worth of stuff on mine because it came with 128gb and yes, it’s more comfy but all of my previous iPads have been 64, no sweat.
I have a music and non-music iPad. My non-music one only has 32GB, but I get by with it for reading, streaming services, and YouTube.
Music definitely eats up a lot more space.
Pardon me for stating a personal opinion as a fact. I get tired of putting disclaimers on everything I write around here.
That said, as someone who doesn't work much at all with sample based instruments and is fairly selective with apps these days, your opinion doesn't change my opinion. Also, I was responding mainly to @LinearLineman - who has a prodigious output of recorded and rendered audio track projects, and keeps them archived onboard. I maintain that is solid advice for him ... though possibly not for everyone as I'll admit I over generalized a bit.
199 is a great price for a touch screen midi controller
I think you could make it work, but you'll really have to be selective like others have said. I just transitioned from that exact same iPad (9th gen 64gb) to the 2024 Air 512gb. The reason was the 9th Gen was glitching with too many plugins. I was also having to continuously move my recordings off the iPad because of space issue.
I would go for a more recent model.
/Just my opinion and all the other personal disclaimers
@wim @tubespace sorry for the confusion. See edit at top of thread. Not using the iPad 9 for music production.
100% true in my case. I bought my first iPad 18 months ago and went for cheapest 64GB option. Huge mistake. Based on my experience I know now my next iPad will be 512GB at least.
This is the sole reason I upgraded to a Mini 7 from a Mini 6. 256gb is not enough space for me personally given I use tons of GBs on the various romplers, especially the behemoth that is Pure Synth Platinum 2 and all its IAPs. For my useage case, 512gb is the minimum I require. And for me personally, the iPad Mini form factor fits my workflow flawlessly. (True fact, the reason I stopped using a Mini and switched to an iPhone for slightly over a year was indeed the issue of storage on my Mini 6.)
That said, I also love the slate purple colour on my Mini 7. But that's only subjective to my own tastes.
Anyways @wim , I believe you meant 64gb, not 64mb. 😅 But regardless, neither 64mb nor 64gb are enough to comfortably create music in this day and age. Perhaps one could get away with a 128gb iPad if they solely stick to the entire iOS Korg Environment and Multitrack DAW with a couple AUv3 plugins for mastering purposes, as well as pay for monthly cloud storage. Oddly enough, I set up my Mini 7 with all my romplers and sh-t, and yet I'm producing my next album in Gadget rather than NS2. 😂
👍 @wim
If i were living in USA i will be DOWN for one of those
That's my main iPad for music and basically because Headphone output is awesome and simple. CCK still works great if I need some USBs to plug MIDI Controllers.
When I want to play "unplugged" (just with iPad battery + Xiaomi MI Speaker connected via 3.5mm cable) I feel is much easier with this one as any USB-C iPad (you NEED a interface at least for audio output, that's crazy)
Otherwise, I'm super OK with 64gb, even tho is not too much, I know. But some ppl say here, I'm mostly opening AUM and playing more "live" music and not recording/arraging too much in the iPad.
I didn't stop to consider live usage. 😅 In that case, seems a 64gb iPad isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if it comes with a headphone jack.
I love my 256gb iPad 9th gen. I may pick up one of these 64gb ones for a non recording use, $199 is a good deal.
I guess the most likable thing for me on a iPad is this little magic box can do music stuffs.... i guess is difficult to handle everything at the same time (production, playing, recording, arranging music). But for just play and record stems is, for me, the best "hardware"
That's an excellent point.
I just re-read your original post after your response and thought I’d add a few words.
Thanks @LinearLineman for posting this.
Not everyone is in a position to spend the ridiculous amounts Apple asks for memory and this definitely helps.
iPad, despite the above is still the most affordable and stable entry point to music production, period. So making sweeping statements like yours felt a bit unnecessary because it could discourage folks on who can’t afford more than that.
When I thirst for the newer and the greater new thing I always remind myself that I was quite happy making music on the 32gb iPad Air 1, with Audiobus and Gadget etc. and it sounded great, at least to my ears.
I’m sorry if my original reply was a bit ‘knee jerk’. I thought I’d clarify the intention behind it.

^ This. The idea “ 64mb is not worthwhile for any musician” is just nonsense. I’ve been making music on this 64mb Air 4 for several years now, with a number of well-received albums to show for it, as well as using it live.
In fact I’d rather take a cheaper ipad out to gigs and festivals, jut in case it gets damaged or nicked.
Really?! 64 megabytes?
I had Wim on repeat….uknowworramean 🤪 Gigabytes innit.
I worked for more than 1 year on a 64gb iPad. If you don’t have TONS of samples it may work, but you need to be very disciplined, archive your projects when done, no useless apps, etc. And some things are just not doable (like StaffPad libraries take 15-20gb, Logic can take easily up to 20gb, Xinematix 15gb).
I know! Couldn’t help it, soz 😆
I don’t use sample libraries or big ROM stuff. If I’m using samples I roll my own, and generally the apps I use are pretty lightweight. Saying that I’ve got an absolute ton of them on here.
Finished sessions I offload onto SSD or desktop.
I could only dream of this amount of storage when I first started making music in Octamed…
👍
Do you transfer from iPad to Desktop via SSD or other option? if u have any option besides external harddrive/usb would be nice to know
Wish we got bargains like that in the UK.
That’s the thing though. Call it discipline or focus. No bullshit. Lean. No games etc. ideally in airplane mode but that’s so much harder to do 😅
I generally have 2 iPads on the go. One powerhouse (currently Pro 11 4th gen) and one less so (iPad 10th gen). One lives permanently in my music rig, the other comes with me.
When a new iOS drops guess which iPad gets updated first?
I usually share via Airdrop, from the Files app Works perfectly, even with multiple/large files.
I got one today. Very happy about it. And, it has an headphone jack 🥳😂 Again, it’s for everything but music. Btw, can’t you do external storage on iPads now? I remember discussion about that.
