Scaler 2.9 bad performance

Hi everyone!

I wonder if anyone else noticed the awfully slow performance in Scaler 2.9 when hosted for ex inside AUM? The gui almost freezes when try to work with chords in anyway, ex. Dragging chords in patterns or just try to change pattern everything is slow and not functional anymore. Seem to work ok for a short while but then the whole gui gets sluggish. The node statistics i AUM does not show any overload for dsp in anyway. Have got this behavior for atleast 1 year if not more. Same problem on both my ipads 12.9 M1 and also 10.5 2017. I would really appreciate any advice or tip on what could be causing this issue. Happens even if Aum host only Scaler 2.9 and no other auv3 also.

Thx in advance, have a nice day everybody!

  • I’ve never gotten scaler 2 to do its job without unbearable lag, 2018 A12X iPad Pro.. bought it over a year ago, tried to use it a few times since and gave up. Sad to read it’s Just as bad on M1.

  • It lags on iPad Air M2 too :| But the devs said Scaler 3 will come at some point and it will be much more optimized on iOS devices than the current version.

  • Thx for your input guys, then im not alone it seems. Well we can hope for a miracle or that the devs fix this issue in an upcoming version, it was a really nice usable app before this problem occured.
It's unusable in it's current state.

  • Consider uploading a short video demonstrating the issue and share the link on the Scaler plugin forum.

I hope they offer an upgrade discount, I gave them money for a glitchy jpg basically via Scaler 2 :D

  • Haha.. :D yep that's a good comparison on how fluid the app feels right now..
Well uploading a movie wont work but i can upload still images and a good explanation of the problem on the Scaler forum. Saw someone added a comment about the sluggishness on the forum but no solution, they said they had not experienced any problems them selves.

Has anyone have a fluid and fully working Scaler 2 version 2.9 at this time?

Yes, it works fine on my iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) with IOS 17.2. I checked the standalone, the audio AUv3 version and ScalerControl midi AUv3 in the AUM host.

Changing between the MAIN, SEQ, CHORD, PAD and MOD tabs isn‘t instant, but takes max two seconds due to the animated layout changes. Each of the tabs itself is fluid and i don‘t change between the tabs that often. There is no lagging when dragging chords on my iPad (which is the same as your older one btw).

  • Thx for the info Ki, glad it's working out for you still, maybe it's a combo between the actual ios version and scaler 2 that makes it work (or not) in my case. I run Ios 17.7 on my iPad 10.5 and 17.6 on my newer 12.9 M1. Both having the same slow freeze like behaivor.

  • Yup… it was/is obviously shovel-ware to the iOS platform. It’s obvious they spent literally zero effort beyon just recompiling for iOS.

Great tool, etc, just massive disappointment on iOS.

And linking multiple instances (ie for chord and performance) is painful.

  • It's too bad, i really liked that app too, fun to work with and a useful tool in so many ways. One could wish for better proactive app update management from the the devs during and after new ios releases.

  • Last time I checked it Scaler 2 still had issues staying in sync when using other sample-rates than 44.1k...

  • Yes Samu ive noticed the sync problem also, but even in 44.1k.

I remember that the host app was a factor as well; I tested in AUM, Loopy Pro and Drambo. It didn't work great on any of them, particularly when moving the plugin window around, but it was clearly worse in some.

I think you're talking about this problem when using Scaler in Logic Pro, right? Several developers have said that this is a Logic Pro bug, not their plugins. :(

Not only in Logic but all hosts that are set to use other sample-rate than 44.1k will eventually drift out of sync...
When using an external audio-interface it's easy to change the sample-rate to 44.1k but if not then the device is stuck at 48k.

I ditched Scaler 2 long time ago and don't miss it at all...

  • Personally I don’t use it for performance, yea it is a bit large, but I like to use it to write chord progressions for songs. Then I typically record the midi, or export if in standalone, and remove it from the session.

On a complete side note @cem_olcay new app is like a mini Scaler 2 based on emojis.
