  • My entry for this month, posted a few months ago on its own thread. The lyrics were written in collaboration with @richardyot. The track will be included in our forthcoming collaborative album.

    Lyrics in the spoiler

    Screaming out loud, fake agony
While your mind is up there in the canopy
    No you're not this anomaly
It's just the way you see
    Just the way you see

Stab me in the back with insanity
The rule of the pack, for your vanity
    Don't expect an apology
    It's a fallacy
    It's a fallacy

    Is it over?
    Are you done?

Stick to the ones who really see
What's inside your mind with clarity
No matter those around who won't agree
    Just leave them be
    Yeah leave them be
    No time for hostility
    No time for hypocrisy
Be the man you wanna be
Be the man you wanna be
    Honestly

    Looking for attention desperately
    twisting my words shamelessly
No, I was not your enemy
It's just the way you see
    Just the way you see

Stab me in the back without empathy
Summoning a mob for your scammony
Does it taste like a victory
    Or an eulogy
    Or an eulogy

    Is it over?
    Are you done?

Stick to the ones who really see
What's inside your mind with clarity
No matter those around who won't agree
    Just leave them be
    Yeah leave them be
    No time for hostility
    No time for hypocrisy
Be the man you wanna be
Be the man you wanna be
    Honestly

It was a great song. Listening again, it is still great.
What a surprise, a collab between two of my favorite musicians turns out to be great.
I’ve been trying to find something even slightly wrong. I couldn’t.

  • What a great song. Brilliant use of the repeating rhymes. Instantly memorable. Really well done guys, hugely impressed @JanKun @richardyot

I didn't take much notice of the lyrics, but I do like the singing - comes across like another instrument and complements the guitar well.

I would say, that this is probably my favourite track that I've heard from either of you.

Obviously I am biased since I was involved with the making of this one, but it's got some great guitars and a great vocal melody ♥

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

If you want to see the light
You have to look into the night
    Contradictions that convey
The mystery can lead the way

    The voice in the silence
    Will speak suddenly
    The whispering islands
    The wind through the trees

    We couldn’t see
    The stars were out
    We drifted our sleep

    We couldn’t reach
    The distant shores
The sea was far too deep

    And so you blindly
Felt tears run down your cheek
    Way behind me
When the world was cold and bleak

If you grasp this whisp of smoke
The fractured dreams it will evoke
Can be your guide, into the dark
Where stars emerged from a single spark

    The howl in the darkness
    Will make your skin crawl
    It shatters the silence
    With its awful call

    We couldn’t see
    The stars were out
    We drifted our sleep

    We couldn’t reach
    The distant shores
The sea was far too deep

    And so you blindly
Felt tears run down your cheek
    Way behind me
When the world was cold and bleak

(edit) I also made a video for this one:

I think I already mentioned this to you somewhere else, but the lyrics of this song are the greatest you wrote this year and are not far from your song "Sparks" which is my all time R. Yot favourite !

My entry came about due to a piece I wrote about five years ago. That piece became two tracks about my head pains. I may post one of them next month, as I was intending to this month. Then after the slightly harder on the ears tracks, I happened to put on some Gong. Later that night I chatted to my wife about morning cups of tea (that she was looking forward to in her holidays, hint hint). From that came about some more mellow tracks, which I post here now.

I posted the tracks as I would have a vinyl single with an A and B sides. So I’m putting the A side here for your critique. The B side is after it on the YouTube if you care to listen to it for completeness, but obviously I’m entering only one track here.

I am posting two versions, as I mixed one on my iPad speakers while on the sofa. I then tried it on my monitors and there was uncontrollable bass (I do have 3 bass tracks at some points in the track), so I’ve posted another version that has the bass better controlled. I’m still learning how to mix for different speakers, so bear with me!

    Monitor Mix

    iPad Mix

Lots of work and love put in a single track. It goes through many different phases with the bass as a guideline. It takes us on an ever evolving journey in your mind as if we were witnessing in real time new ideas popping up. You sure had fun making this and it shows!

I’ll just repost the link because the preview of the previous one didn’t really work.

Feeling sad this track doesn't get more listens on SoundCloud. Bots are deaf and tasteless 😂😂. Really like how you build rhythmical expectation in the intro and how you unexpectedly (and viciously?) breaks it with the drums, it gets me every time! Nicely done. Great strings and as usual great atmosphere and track development. So happy to have you as a regular on this thread (and elsewhere😉)

    Here's mine for November.

I improvised the music track using two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the violin, flute, cello, and bassoon; Noire for the piano; Jaeger for the singing voice; and Omnisphere for the other instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The Trapeze Artist.

    Beautiful and evocative as usual.
With such title, I was expecting something more dramatic, like the story of a trapezist telling us the story of his/her trapezist partner who tragically failed and fell... But on the opposite, the track let us witness the trapezist floating supremely on the air in slow motion, in perfect control of her/his art. Great job! Feeling like going to Circus now!

Continuing in the same lyrical vein as my entry last month, but with a fuller musical production, this is Bench People:

It could be an old piano, wrapped in blue
Could be a pile of breeze blocks hidden from view
But the bright tarpaulin starts shifting on its own
An arm appears, then there’s a face, then a home

Bench people you look like you’re watching TV
In zen like contemplation and blind to the likes of you and me

Sitting there on their bench watching the world go by
Swaddled in a pile of old blankets under the leaden sky
Faces on a passing bus turn to stare
These people, do they really live there?

Bench people you look like you’re watching TV
In zen like contemplation and blind to the likes of you and me
The screeching Deliveroos, the roar of the bus
There but for the grace of god, sit you and not us
Bench people, it seems like I’m watching TV

    Hipster barbers, bao bun places
Anonymous people with their long lost faces
Market stalls serving up artisan gin
They don’t give a fuck about you about him

Bench people who look like they’re watching TV
The elected self-righteous blind to what they will and won’t see
The screeching Deliveroos, the roar of the bus
We all count our blessings it’s them and not us
Bench people, they look like they’re watching TV

Very sharp lyrics with engaging melody. It was an interesting choice to choose a lighter musical frame to illustrate your social observation. Nicely done and clean production !

This was also submitted to the 4 track challenge. [edited] put lyrics in spoiler.

Will be back to listen to others' tunes.

    staring down a blank slate
    looking at my shoes
    can't come up late
    what am I gonna do

    what's my number
    what's my plan
    gotta finish thing
    to get to thpromised land

    he said
    i've got a contest
    it's got some rules
    just follow these
    and all will be truej

    the rule is four
    four and no more
    don't use five
    or i'll disqualify

    !

Great song with amazing atmosphere. The song is so great that I really wish it slowly built up with more textures and rhythmic elements added to the soundscape. I understand it was made for a 4 track contest, to the point that the original contest idea became part of the lyrics concept. That being said, the song is so nice that nothing stops you to turn it into something else with an extended version. It shouldn't be that difficult to slightly modify the lyrics to take it somewhere else out of the contest limitations and give the song the form it really deserves. Really great job. Sincerely hope to hear this further developed, it really deserves it !

  • @JanKun . I like the vocal melodies and vocal rhythms a lot in this piece. The way the vocals harmonize with the guitar parts is also very cool. That little interlude around 3:45 where things get softer is lovely. Dig the sudden ending. Nice work all around!

Thank you :) We are indeed lucky to be able to enjoy making music!

  • @richardyot
Love the instrumentals on this one. It’s one of your best, both musically and lyrically. I also think the video works very well with the song. It doesn’t get in the way, but does a great job of matching the tone and pace of the music.

    @Fruitbat1919
I like the mysterious opening that segues into a darker tone and then switches again to a strong bass with an exotic flute. Lots of musical shifts and changes, but holds together as it drives forward. Nicely done.

    @unlink
Moody and symphonic, then elegantly opens up to the drums, signaling that there’s more complexity ahead. Builds to a peak to return to the opening, but with a piano. Beautifully conceived and performed.

    @BillS
Very strong lyrics with a perceptive view of the world, even if a bit-shocking. Is it better to not look under the tarpaulin? Ignoring it doesn’t make it go away. The music is well-crafted, especially the piano and vocals.

    @ecamburn
This one has a simmering, percolating feel to it, like a stew on a stove. Love the bass-like drone and bubbly melody lines. See, I didn’t have to use f*ve even once.

    @studs1966
This is a professional-quality production with a solid beat and great vocals. The mix is especially impressive.

    @piano39
This song works well with its transitions in tone and direction, while it circles around its core melody. Covers a lot of ground in just three minutes. Nicely played and recorded.

    @JanKun
What a wonderfully open and full sound, both in the vocals and instrumentals! Reminds me of those moments when the Beatles seemed to touch the sky with their ambitious multilayered concoctions. Catchy tune and lyrics, too. Bravo!
