Apple Notes app

This morning when I first opened my ipad there was a notice that to continue using Notes I would have to agree to new terms of service - it took me right to settings and I agreed because what other choice do I have?

I have a folder in Notes that I use just for our forum posts; things I want to save or get back to or comment on and I've had this going for at least a couple years. It's been helpful.

So I go to save something and … poof! it's all been erased! All my notes gone. wtf!

Has anyone else had this experience? Kind of devastating. But luckily I checked on my computer which is synced to Notes and everything is still there now; but will that suddenly go poof too? Is there a way to back up all my notes just in case?

  • Are you sure they're really gone and that you're not just displaying another account? For instance, I have synced Yahoo notes, iCloud Notes, and notes from my old work Exchange account on my device. Disabling notes in any of these accounts settings makes those notes disappear.

I've been taken off guard when somehow I selected a different account and it was showing only those notes. I've also had situations where sync stopped because of having been logged out of one of those accounts.

It might be worth logging out of your Apple ID and back in, and also checking accounts settings to be sure notes are enabled for the account.

Visiting iCloud.com from a browser is another way to get to your notes. You can

If your device backs up to iCloud then as a very last resort, a full restore would get them back provided they are still in the cloud. An iCloud restore requires wiping your device and will force the OS and all apps to the latest version. Also any apps completely gone from the App Store will not restore.

iMazing has some options for backing up your Notes data. I don't know about other options.

Thank you for all your suggestions. As it turned out, it took about 4 hours and then it all showed up again. I didn't have to do anything. I had checked it a few times without luck to see if I had accidentally logged out of icloud or something but I hadn't.

    Anyway; false alarm; crises averted.

  • Apple Notes now lets you link inside a note to another note, which is tremendously useful

Like a hyperlink? Hmm. I’ll have to look into that. Sounds interesting.

I envy your optimism. "False alarm" for important data randomly disappearing for hours without explanation shows a highly positive attitude towards digital problems 😃

But then again I grew up with the C64 where such stuff simply didn't happen...

Last time I used Notes (a few years ago) the only way I found was to either make a full device backup or jailbreak your iDevice and save the SQLite database of Notes.
I have first switched to Notebooks (by Alfons Schmid) then to Textastic as soon as Alexander added full text search in all documents. It also syncs to iCloud if you want and it supports SFTP and WebDAV as client and server, amongst others.
A good free alternative is Readdle Documents btw.

Obsidian is my alternative to Notes app. Like Textastic, files are just that … files. I store them on iCloud and have access to them on any device. No need for their subscription cloud service.

  • Re backing up notes - I believe you can do this in Notes on a Mac. I think each note can be exported (as pdf IIRC) one at a time, but may be useful for your most important notes. HTH 😺

  • I like Readdle’s Document app. I’ve been using it on the iPhone for a few years. I have imported a bunch of audio books and music into it and use it primarily for listening to them. It’s funny, but I don’t use it much for actual documents.

I use notes a lot for general note taking and I have Textastic on the iPad for taking care of files that notes and documents do not handle very well. I have found that Textastic is really handy when you need to change the extensions of files and for opening files that Text on the Mac would open without any problems. What would be really cool would be the Files app itself handling dealing with different files in a better way. Textastic is also excellent for connecting to servers when I need to go and do a little online admin work and file transferring.

Memories of slow loading software via cassette, then floppies that were still floppy, today we have OS’s that do it all, except when they don’t. :#

Exactly 😄 and sorry for my often slightly exaggerated pessimism. But I do find it funny that random data loss or "temporary disappearance" is still an acceptable thing in this day and age...

    Very nice.
I’m a former Evernote user but moved to apple notes 3 years ago. I has improved so mush over the years so there is absolutely no reason to pay the expensive evernote subscription
