Converting a folder structure of 300 WAV files to mono

2022:

  • Find an audio editor that can run on Linux and supports batch processing
  • Learn that editor
  • Hope it can process a nested folder structure, and run it, fingers crossed

Alternatively, find a commandline tool and/or write a complicated bash script.

2024:

Insane!

    That's impressive!

It's more fun to do it with ffmpeg and a shell script though. 😉

Heh yes, but still -- I'm pretty convinced the vast majority of people are totally unaware of the possibilities. ChatGPT is STILL, even at the end of 2024, largely presented in the media as "a funny tool that can write little stories and stuff".

  • Now I wonder if I can come up with the prompt to get ChatGPT to serve me up that archive.zip? (Or are you paying for a premium 'walled garden' version?)

  • Wow! I have a bunch of IRs with separate wav files for the L & R channels, also organized in nested folders. Do you think GPT could merge those into stereo files?

  • I’m impressed. More and more

Yes, I'm living in the paid walled garden 😃 (I'm poor but $20 a month for basically the whole universe at your fingertips is really quite ridiculously cheap and a total no-brainer)

    Yes of course 😄

Sox is excellent. My most used commandline audio processor since years.
And I don't have to share my audio files with M$!

  • Example: Convert a list of any wave files to 16bits, mono, 32kHz sampling rate with anti-aliasing and dithering.
It will save to a sub folder to avoid irritation and to keep file names as they are.
