Favourite Rhodes Sound?

I tend to use House Mark 1 - short of the expensive super-accurate recreations, what’s your favourite Rhodes-type sound? I’m thinking presets on common iOS synths I’ll likely already own, rather than huge, dedicated apps I don’t have room for.

  • Everybody says that Pianoteq has the best Rhodes in iOS (I don't have it)....

VTines for me was my favorite for a while, even tho I had Vintage Electric, Module and Neo Soul Keys 1. Other ones would say Neo Soul Keys 2 is very very good, but it's like 1gb or 2gb I think (?)

Months ago I bought a Yamaha CP Reface to get my first "hardware" Rhodes sound and it's my favorite ever :) I didn't thought it would be much different but it was.

So.... go for VTines if u want some "cheap" Rhodes sounds, or maybe a good sample to DecentSampler. If you want a GOOD one, go for Pianoteq or some used Yamaha CP Reface

  • Vintage Tines I and II in Pianoteq 8 are great modelled Rhodes.
The whole app with all instruments is under 100MB and you can do a lot with the free demo version.
The extremely generous terms of the demo version mean that you have a time limit (that you can reset as many times as you wish), and a couple of the notes are disabled (I believe some high and some low F# and G#), I believe that's it.

Buying a pack to fully unlock a couple of instruments on the other side is pretty expensive, you are buying the full desktop version and get the iOS version as an extra, so there are no savings here as you would usually get when buying an app for iOS.

The latest Rhodes Anthology on desktop is probably the best you’re ever going to get. Unless you own the real thing.

Can you pick those Vintage Tines in the free demo version?

You can play every instrument in the demo version, with those limitations.
The blocked notes are F#2, G#2, A#2 and C#6, D#6, F#6, G#6, A#6, and the time limit is something around 20 minutes, after which you can tap on a clock to refill the timer.

  • Anything that sounds less than pristine and is appropriately reactive to the action of the keyboard I’m playing.

  • There are many good-sounding Rhodes on iOS (considering the size of sample libraries) and not much that is truly bad, but you really need physical modelling for playing feel and response and properly nuanced sound. So Pianoteq if you want to spend that much or VTines if you don't - both well worth it.

My fav is by far the EP in Korg Module. The ‘boomy vibe’ preset is amazing to me. Sounds even better running into a guitar amp sim in AUM or something too. Like a Vox AC type of amp

  • When you ask for the best you will get many to choose from.

Check out the free StudioLogic app “Numa Player”. It has 30 instruments and 3 are Rhodes and 2 are Wurlitzer EP’s. It should be a solid midi implementation since they sell MIDI Controllers and would AUM to please the pro keyboard players.

  • Vtines is a good budget option, Pianoteq is very good and has some great presets too. House Mark 1 has a nice clean sound but I personally can't stand the way it flips into a very dirty sound so quickly once over a certain velocity.

i really don't know how to do that. But still.... i think the "Drive" knob from the Yamaha CP Reface gives a lot of character to the sound.... so kind of difficult to do it maybe (?) and the incorpored keyboard is sensitive! (But still, i use a StudioLogic 73 Acuna for Rhodes Sounds)

  • VTines would be my suggestion too and I have them all (as well as previously owning a real Mk1 Stage 73).
Neosoul Keys 2 is more realistic and tweakable but takes up a lot of space and isn’t as instantly user-friendly as VTines.
Pianoteq is good but I still prefer NSK2.

  • I haven’t tried the pianotec Rhodes but think neosoul keys sounds great.

That Yamaha Reface CP sounds great.

  • ‘Electric Vintage’ is one of my faves.

The Rhodes V8 Pro is absolutely stunning - I can't get over how good it is. Currently on sale, and also now available from alternative sources.
