iPhone 16 or Pro: how much better are the Pro microphones?

edited November 9 in Hardware

It's really all there in the subject... I have an iPad Pro M1 and can't say that I've ever thought about using the "studio-grade" microphones, because they're so tiny compared with the capsule on my Rode NT1.

(See my report on the NT1 5th gen here: https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/56143/rode-nt1-5th-generation-does-the-usb-output-work-with-ipad-update-yes-it-does.)

    I did find this:

Several YouTubers have expressed surprise that the new mics are as good as they are -- which doesn't mean they're as good as the larger mics we're already using. Patrick's Rode sounds fuller. On the other hand, one reason I'm using this Apple gear in the first place is that it's easy to set up and get playing. That can make the difference between a track that happens and one that doesn't -- or just a fun hour and something less satisfying.

  • I don’t know about the mics yet, but the quality of speakers going from an iPhone Pro 11 to the new iPhone Pro 16 has been outstanding for me. I can’t believe the stereo field I get out of this little phone.

That was a great breakdown. I think the mics are great as a backup, but would degrade a production if all instruments relied on them.
