Tahiti Time revisited (60’s style exotica music)

This is an embellished version of a 4-track song I posted earlier this year. It’s tribute to the tiki music that was a fad in the 50’s and 60’s. Just lush chords and a gentle beat that is supposed to take you away to a tropical island paradise, or something like that.

I used samplewiz, Sunrizer @Spidericemidas presets, and DrumJam for the percussion. Because of the 2mb limit for file attachments I had make it a lower quality .mp3

Comments

  • Jesus Christ. 😳 It's like Martin Denny's "Quiet Village", but so much more lush in the arrangement and chord progressions. Oh god, those sublime chord progressions. ❤️ This is definitely the perfect way to jumpstart my high mate. 👏

On that note, can you direct me to other artists and pieces of "Tiki" music? I need more of this.

  • I wholeheartedly agree with everything Jim just said. Even on these tiny PC office speakers, it sounds big and lush. I remember music like this growing up. My parents would play similar records on the "hi-fi" in the living room. Personally, I don't notice much difference between mp3 and other formats. I just listen to the music. The changes were surprising, but all made sense. At a few spots, I thought... I wasn't expecting that. Wonder what's next. Outstanding and compelling composition. Well done! Looking forward to listening tonight in my good headphones. Good luck with the new diet.

Holy cow. That was stunning. You need to put up a high quality version somewhere so we can buy this. Do you have an album’s worth of material in this style?

  • Yes, that was brilliant, I could listen to an albums worth of this.

  • Just listened to it again. It is absolutely magical.

Wow, thanks for the comments @jwmmakerofmusic, @Paulieworld, @NeuM and @thesoundtestroom! (I think I may have used one or two of your samplewiz patches on this too, Doug, I was playing with one a lot with this I remember).

No, I don’t have an album or anything with this kind of music, but I would like to make more. I almost 100% decided on joining SoundCloud, would like to put some of my stuff up somewhere.

@jwmmakerofmusic, there are a few good online radio stations that play this kind of music. ‘ The Quiet Village radio’ and ‘Tiki Radio’ by aloha joe. You can also get those on TuneIn radio app and others radio apps.

If you join Bandcamp you could have your album stream or sell online. I guess there are probably still quite few sites which can do this. Or you could sell your album (when you finish it) on iTunes also...

  • Just listened in headphones. Really enjoyed this! You may be onto something. I think I’m going to put a few other things on the back burner and give this genre a try.

You should consider Bandcamp. It’s free and there seems to be no limit to what you can post. I have been using it as an archive for about 3 years. I actually prefer the interface to SoundCloud. Unlike SoundCloud, you can rearrange the order of your tracks, and the presentation just looks cleaner and more professional. I only stopped using it as my main forum when the URLs stopped working in the Audiobus Forum. That is, they only display text and force the listener to redirect to Bandcamp, whereas SoundCloud lets you listen without leaving the forum. Not really a big deal, since it opens a new tab, but it just bugged me a little. Give it a try. Free is good, and your text links will take the listener to a nice looking place. They require you to use a 1400:x 1400 graphic, but you can get those for free on the internet. I just find something I like, then crop and resize it in Paint.

I hope things work out with your new menu choices. My wife is a great cook and has been making me some really tasty, healthy meals for years. If it was up to me, I’d go to McDonald’s, which I did before we met. We go out once a month and splurge. Have a good one!

I’ll take a look a closer look at bandcamp. Yes, free is good. I think this genre is fun to dabble in. Looking forward to your creation @Paulieworld. I kinda like all mood music in general.

Yeah, Im having a kind of salad for supper. It’s a Korean rice/salad bowl called bibimbap. Has a lot of veggies, rice, and topped off with a fried egg. Rather tasty, filling, healthy. (My wife is Korean).

Love bibimbap. First had it in Japan (of all places!).

  • My wife made Korean Beef tonight, and I thought of you. Damn, that’s good eating. We have a little place near us called New Korean Garden. Each table has an open flame grill. They bring you raw meat, veggies, and assorted spices and dips, and let you do as you please. I remember having something called Kim Chi. Based on the description, it sounds horrendous. I can’t begin to describe the taste. Fermented, sour, insanely spicy… exquisite! They also have a full bar. Dude makes a killer Martini. Peace bro!

  • Sounds like bulgogi. Yum. Only wish my wife didn’t go vegetarian on me and stop cooking it (need a frowning smiley here). Now I have to go out for meat. Yeah, a table grill is common in Korean restaurants. We use to use a small butane grill on our table here when meat was welcome. My wife makes kimchi often. It’s an acquired taste. At first I didn’t like kimchi, now I do. There are many kinds. She made one this week using apples and persimmons (blended) for a different flavor. Really good.

  • I love this. It’s one of my all time favorite genres and you’ve captured the vibe really well.

Modern: anything with Gary Brandin, starting with The Blue Hawaiians. The Tikiyaki Orchestra.
Classic: Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter, Martin Denny.
Check out the Ultra Lounge album series.

  • Very nice! I like the undercurrent of slightly-off key harmonics and ambient noise, as well.

  • Man I enjoyed that. Not sure what I expected but not this. Your description nailed it though. Was there some funky chord change maybe around 1:25? I’m like , whoa what was that?
Very cool stuff. You should continue down this road. You’re good at it.
Appreciate you listing apps used. I always want to know.
Oh, so selecting mp3 is the secret to getting the file to send?

Thank you very much, @garden, @tubespace, @Ben! Yes, I will make some more of these kind of tracks, maybe put together an album.

Ben, I believe the unusual harmony at 1.25 is a mistake I didn’t correct. The melody there is the ‘Marooned’ patch in @Spidericemidas free presets for the Sunrizer synth. It is one -note higher than concert pitch. Instead of changing pitch in the preset I tried transposing a note down while recording, and got lost a little bit, lol. It was the last thing I recorded that night and I was getting sleepy, so I left it like that for a little ear tickle. I generally keep first takes unless it’s real horrible, so many of my tracks posted here has mistakes.

I highly recommend grabbing Spidericemidas presets if you have Sunrizer, they are all great! Here’s a short improv song made solely using these presets. https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/60018/leaving-the-forest-100-sunrizer-synth-with-spidericemidas-presets

Edit: Sunrizer synth is on sale today! From 12.99 to 5.99! Great day to pick it up.

  • @Dav . However it was that you arrived at that it sounded awesome!

  • Lovely chords, choice of instruments etc… very languid 🙏

    Yeah very cool track Dav.

I don't know if this one qualifies as tiki, but it's the same era and same general vibe:

  • Well done, this is beautiful. I do somewhat similar stuff but have never recorded it properly. I'm working on doing live versions in Loopy Pro, but it won't be as lush as this!

So THAT'S the name of that song! I recognised it right away, and have searched years for it. Funny title. 😂 But seriously fun and well-orchestrated music.

  • Haven't been listening here much recently, but so glad I clicked on this. Loved Lounge, Space age jazz, Esquivel, etc... when I was a teenager, and this took me back to that era. Loved the fusion of styles at that time, represented her through that lilting tango like bass, the off kilter chords and chromaticism, and the 'quirky' instrumentation. Great job. Do more!

  • Thank you so much, @GeoTony, @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr, @belldu! Nice video. I hadn’t heard that one before.

I will make some more of these type songs. The Spidericemidas presets in Sunrizer are perfect for a modern tiki sound. When I first posted this track I thought it sounded too unsteady, but listening to it again now perhaps non-quantizing adds to the feel here.
