Just added a new freak to the party

The arturia MiniFreak Stellar edition has just found a home in the studio, and i am loving this thing!

I was about to pull the trigger on the microfreak but after some deep YouTube dives, the mini just seemed like the right choice for me. For now 😎

Any other minifreakers in here???

  • I’ve got one. I didn’t bond with it. Every preset sounds cold and metallic to me, at least compared with my novation supernova.

  • Very nice setup you got there.😀

This supernovas are really nice! I still love the mininova quite a bit for making downtempo jams and stuff! The minifreak is a bit more metallic at times but it can cut thru the mix!

Thank you man! I’m digging the current table of instruments, its hard to pick where to start tho might have to put some more of the shelf for a few days 🤣

  • That looks like such a creative place to be. How are you getting along with the P-6? And what is the tiny box with 18 buttons and two knobs beside the TX-6?
The videos online of the Minifreak sound very good to me. Nice!

I may not use hardware, but I love seeing others' setups. You got a great setup there mate. :) Maybe upload a video of a hardware jam mate.

  • Nice addition!

The p6 is fun! I travel a lot for work and love making jams outside …..and i like having battery powered anything lol!
I love the 404 but taking it with requires a power bank or internal AA batteries, i have both but its just bulky!
The p6 is a great device for that especially with usb c sampling… and for sitting around the house making little jams.
The sample time is very small per sample, reminds me of a 202/303, so it isn’t a 404 replacement but it also sounds very good and is a ton of fun.

The little box is a tiny bluetooth battery powered MIDI controller.

Awesome device for playing synths on iOS. They have an older device that’s perfect for koala jams!

I love hardware but i do a better job at controlling my GAS by using my iPad ! iPadOS as you know is so versatile i can talk myself out of a lot of hardware buy getting a new less expensive few dozen apps 😂😂

I’ll probably start posting to YouTube again soon, i just am not great at filming but I’ve been thinking a lot about it! Thanks man!

Thanks man! I jammed on it for so many hours yesterday hahaha. It sounds so good and has a lot of sweet spots!
It was time for a bigger synth amongst my mostly all portable machines. The keys feel so good and programming the synth is quite fun!

Thanks man! After a lot of trail and error trades and returns lol i found The set up i really can work with! There’s another table full of stuff that i don’t use much but isnt really worth selling that ill pull from, from time to time but this is the heart of the operation!

Everything is going into AUM in its own channel to mix and add effects!

The P6 has a nifty little granular in it too, I’m just creating a M4L device to control it’s CC’s, only the thing is during testing I keep getting sidetracked by the dark mystic beauty of it.

The granular is so good!!! I love playing percussion samples in there and anything with a snappy attack . I don’t have Ableton anymore but def a M4L would be a great addition

beautiful synth, congrats, hope it brings lot of inspiration !

I really like that sound engine, had just microFreak (twice :-D) - sold it to fund other gear but this thing sounds incredibly food.. probably at some point will buy miniFreak .. with black keys it looks fantastic

Ha! Yes indeed, iPadOS is super versatile. Glad to be back on one. Only GAS I ever had was for OP-1, and then OP-1 Field. I had my fun with the OP-1 Field, but had to sell it. But at least my GAS is cured. 😂

I’ll probably start posting to YouTube again soon, i just am not great at filming but I’ve been thinking a lot about it! Thanks man!

Thanks! I had a microfreak long ago for a couple of days that i borrowed from a friend and i loved that thing. They have really done a great job at updating it over the years and adding new engines.
If you come back to the freak side, absolutely grab the mini since you are familiar with the micro, its def a nice set of improvements.

The stellar edition is “limited” they say, but there’s still plenty around it seems, id like the keys to be flat black but hey you can’t have it all! Its looks so good and they feel very good

Haha the cables under the desk are a million times worse 🤣 it looks like a freaking habitat for snakes or something 🤣 i suck at cable management since im always grabbing stuff to go and rearranging

Its so easy to get op1 gas 🤣 then you get it and realize it sounds kinda lite. It really takes a lot of diving to get the synth engine sounding thick.
But i love taking it with me and sampling it , working on the tape is ok but i don’t really do that too often.

I really like using the op1 to chop up drum loops, or longer samples… the way you can load a break/loop and set the start end points/pitch and volume per key is great, and some of the effects are a blast. I have to use it with external effects tho! Basically if I’m using the op1f the iPad is hooked up to it to sample and have effects.

It might stay in the studio, but I’m open to sell / trade it if i see something as portable and versatile down the road

    Will do!

Me, I liked the lite sound of OP1f, but that's just down to personal preference. 😂 But yeah I do miss it a little bit, but been nearly 6 months without, so I'll survive just fine and have done so.

The sounds it make definitely do a great job in the mix! I’m just baffled that they have not updated to allow for us to chain more effects per synth. I’m always using the synth effect, and adding a reverb or something to the master then resampling to get at least 2 effects!

If you decide to get one again, people are flooding reverb with them to get that new opxy thing 🤣 its just an op1f with a opz built in… i cannot justify it since its not that much different but, good time to get a deal on a field!

    Nice setup!

How is the MF as a MIDI-controller? I assume all the knobs send CC? Using a Keystep 37 now, and it is tempting to have a full hardware synth about the same size fitting on my DJ-desk. I read it is class-compliant but the only downside seems to be it needs external power and can’t be powered via USB…or can it?

The ASM Explorer has the same form factor, with the same feel to the keybed with polytouch if you want it for a Keystep 37 replacement.

I haven’t actually attempted MIDI out yet. I saw one video where the scales didnt sent the proper info out, but it was an older video any probably addressed. I’ve one used it so far to control the companion app MiniFreak V which is awesome!!! And if you mess up your patch on the synth, the MFV has an undo button and lets you tweak the hardware too. That’s a really sweet feature

  • Big fan. Brought it home to play with its little sibling. They are fun to play with. Enjoy and congratulations!
