SOLVED - Decided between an iPad Mini and the 13in iPad Air - What would you choose?
I have the base iPad currently, but I need a second iPad to test stuff.
I also have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, but iPad specific apps can’t be run on it.
If you had to pick one, assuming the same price, and the most recent generation, which would you pick?
My options are the 256GB iPad Mini, or the 128GB iPad Air 13 in
EDIT: Poll results -
iPad Air M2 won at around 60% of votes.

Apple did do a comparison on their website but I’m trying to see based on music producers choices.

For me no contest, need that extra real estate. the extra power of m2 is very useful too.
I voted for the IPad Air 13 inch as it’s the one I have. Yes that screen size as mentioned is indeed superb. However one caveat as follows. The 13in Air’s strength in size is also its weakness, and by that I mean it can be a little unwieldy to hold with one hand.
If I am sat on the settee using the iPad I usually prop it up against one raised knee. My preferred method of use though is sat at a table with the iPad on a stand. ( Edited to mention that my air is 256gb not the stock 128Gb)
I put my vote in for the Mini, but with 512gb! As mentioned above, the 13" Air is a great screen size, but unwieldly to hold in one hand. The Mini is super portable.
But ultimately it boils down to storage. 128gb is definitely not enough for me personally, with all the romplers I use (especially the behemoth Pure Synth Platinum 2!). Even 256gb didn't allow me any wiggle room since the romplers on their own took up over 200gb worth of space.
So mate, regardless of screen size, do yourself a favour and don't short yourself on storage. 😅
I should have opted for the 256 Air… for like $100 more.. for Logic..
+1 in this. I was going to post something about "portability" in all these iOS Music world I think. 13' iPad isn't different from a Macbook Air maybe? and have keyboard already incorporated! haha
BUT if u want a studio all around iOS, would be beautiful a 13' in the desk . AUM in bigger screens looks beautiful to me. Almost like a touch/portable Mixer
Hi, I’d go with the Mini, simply due to being the perfect size for couch/outside use. If you care more about power &/will use the iPad with a stand/inside, then the Air is a better choice. HTH 😺
I’d go for more storage on the 13” iPad Pro.
be aware the 13" is much more fragile, ie bendable. i wouldn't gig with it without an Otterbox type case, & even then i'd be extra careful. the mini form factor is a lot more durable imo.
May I ask why the 13" instead of the 11" ?
Also I think the mini 7 doesn't support stage manager.
I'm also torn between the mini and the air which is a bit more powerful.
If I manage to get more space in my setup, I'll definitely go with the air :
Solid idea. I was initially planning on 128GB but it didn't seem to make sense.
Yeah the power and screen real estate makes the Air super tempting. Plus, I kinda feel like my iPhone Pro Max is like an iPad Mini.
@Etienne I currently have the iPad 9th Gen at 10.2 in. It's almost the same real estate as the iPad Air M2 11 inch. It wouldn't really be much of an upgrade or a great second device for my needs.
So, bit of a weird turn.
I settled on the iPad Air M2, picked it up. I valued the faster chip, and bigger screen over the compact form of the iPad Mini, especially since I already have a Pro Max phone.
They only had 128GB and I thought it would sorta work for my needs.
But it wasn't. I installed some of my essential apps and I'd already reached 80GB.
Decided to return it. I'll wait for the next sale.
I really do miss the headphone jack. I do have the USB dongle but sometimes I have no audio interface so I use the feature of the headphone jack where I split the microphone line with the headphone jack. It allowed me to record a Hindu rapper while I split the headphone line so we could both hear the recordings.
Maybe I'll try and find a 12.9in second Gen iPad. But sadly, it doesn't support Logic Pro for iPad.
I did buy a really cool keyboard and mouse from Logitech that allows pairing to 3 devices. Between my Windows PC, Mac, and iPad/Raspberry Pi, I think that'll work very well.
For me, the iPad M2 256GB is the better option. Plus, some apps like Djay Pro actually scaled to allow 4 cd decks. Not sure if I was hallucinating when I tested it. My regular iPad only shows 2 decks. Would someone please confirm?
One positive was I finally tried the Drambo update. I think I can finally dive into Drambo. Took a while.
Seriously, thanks everyone for the great feedback.
One more thing. The Apple Smart Cover was terrible for the 13in model. Everytime I'd tap the screen, the iPad would topple over. Defeats the purpose of the cover being foldable.
Had a similar problem with the Magnetic Apple wallet. Good in theory, but it kept falling off my phone if I didn't slide my phone with the wallet into my pocket.
Yep. I remember the days when an iPad Air 2 with 128gb was all I needed, but this was before all the romplers I use were released to iOS 10 or so years ago. These days, I need far more storage, and 512gb seems to be the minimum of what I need for my purposes.
Yeah. Even my 9th Gen iPad has 256GB.
Here's a look at my current mobile work setup, with the new keyboard and mouse.
Windows PC, iPad, Mac Mini under the iPad, and a ton of interesting interplay between the devices. I've also got a webcam, and a Google Pixel 5 phone.
I'll go into more detail in the other thread.
Can’t iOS use external drives for storage as my desktop PC does?
Edit.. all of those samples that can easily be imported in Logic now.. can’t they just live on an external drive?
Not a bad idea. Technically I can use a USB stick and keep my samples between devices.
But that’s not the memory draw. It’s the actual apps I’m loading on the device.
Just me downloading 70 percent of my essential apps took 80GB.
And for musical projects, I’m working on 5-10 at a time. Some of them can be 2GB in size.
They can. However, the caveat isn't the oneshot drum samples but rather the romplers. Yes, Pure Synth Platinum 2 can store samples on an external drive, but it must first be downloaded to internal storage. So 128gb is not enough.
ok, I have yet to download samples for Logic...will see.. Thanks..
Best of luck mate. It's over 30gb, but you are able to pick and choose what you download, or you can download all at once. 🙏
Found this..
What about iCloud storage though?
I’ll be honest…on-demand storage is more valuable than any other option.
It’s better to have the actual storage, accessible, than to buy a smaller iPad, then have to add these external options.
Plus, you cannot move apps to the external storage or cloud.
Yes.. I would assume Logic’s new sample folder import, files would be using internal storage (when downloaded).. hence the reason to get a larger ‘internal’ storage..
