Korg NanoKey Fold
A new portable keyboard from Korg…
Comments
Looks very capable. I just wish they made a battery operated version with Bluetooth. It would be possible to connect a powerbank to the USB port and use the TRS MIDI out to connect the CME WIDI Jack, but it wouldn't be as portable.
Looks cool, but is it available in the US yet? Seems it's only sold by UK vendors as far as I can find on Google.
EDIT: Ah nevermind. Did a little research and got a Korg Nanokey Studio on Affirm loan instead via Amazon. The folding aspect of Nanokey Fold is pretty novel, but for a similar price point on Amazon I got the same amount of keys, plus knobs, a touchpad, drum pads, and Bluetooth connectivity ran on battery.
No Bluetooth? No chance.
Agree about battery and Bluetooth, would have also loved an audio out interface, as in KeyStage or IRig Keys…
@zzrwood : Thanks !
wouldn't it be cool if this was actually a phone!
not having full velocity range is a total dealbreaker, saying that any keyboard without Poly aftertouch at least is a no no for me in 2024.
It's a cool idea but might have left the drawing board a bit too soon
I was going to say the same thing.
No battery, no bluetooth, no velocity sensing, no buy.
Awesome concept, would pay double for the real deal.
Designed by non-keyboardists for non-keyboardists.
Think I will echo these sentiments and will say this also has USB MIDI.

😂🤣
What were they thinking, mad!
I bet M-Vave will come out with a proper one with battery and bluetooth in no time.
At last, far better than having to use the qwerty keys on the laptop that’s in front of it
…oh wait, it’s just about identical to doing that
That was my thought too.
Got this one for about $15 US a few weeks ago. Bluetooth and Battery + two octaves worth of keys and a load of buttons for other controls. Backlit. Fits in my shirt pocket.
I got it after this foldable one finally died after almost eight years of daily use.
I prefer the foldable one by a long-shot for typing. But the other is really handy for when you don't have a surface to set a keyboard on.
That’s a pretty dope concept. Not that it’s new. But it’s not much bigger than a calculator folded.
once they're finished with the 37-key, battery powered synth/midi controller with two screens lol
@wim what is the brand and model of that second one?

Keep in mind that it's a somewhat odd shape. When it folds out, the halves are sort of angled inward. I find it ergonomic, but if stuff that isn't straight bothers you, search for other options on Amazon. There are tons. Some with trackpads and numeric pads as well.
I really liked the key action on that keyboard. I could type as well as on my MacBook Pro, though I missed the trackpad. I'll probably order a replacement some time.
With a foldable keyboard, you can't just sit it on your lap, you have to have a surface to put it on. There are many available that lock into a rigid surface. Those might be worth considering.
$120? Are they out of their minds?
They must be, especially since their Nanokey Studio costs the same price point, has battery and Bluetooth, and has more controls.

Guess it's not "as portable", but honestly that doesn't necessarily matter either (at least to me personally).
I mainly have a problem with the price and that cheap style of membrane keyboard. Those are notorious for wearing quickly and failing.
You mean the Studio, or the Fold? (Well, the Nanokey Studio is cheap enough for me personally in case I ever need to replace it later on down the line with something sturdier.)
This is the sort of product that makes me say, "Climate change is worth it."
In a sarcastic way.
The Fold has the cheapie membrane style keyboard. It's inexcusable asking this much for such a cheap product.
Now I see what you mean, and yeah. The Fold isn't worth it for the same price point as the Studio. Also, @jakoB_haQ appears to love the Studio.
So, I'm guessing I made the right call regarding MIDI controllers for iPad.
The NanoKey Studio is a great device. If you use the Kontrol Editor to set a different midi channel for each scene, and sacrifice one pad to be mapped to the record button, you can setup a great jamming platform with Gadget where you don’t need to touch the iPad… 👍
Here’s an example:
Damn that's awesome! 👏 That solidifies I got the right controller.
So you're not using the Gadget native mode for the Nanokey and remapped a bunch of scene# to include the transport?!?!? Please share your mapping if you'd be so kind.
Not my setup, but the idea is to set each scene with the keyboard on a different midi channel and use advanced mode to set each track to corresponding channels.
One of the pads is mapped to the record transport, which allows to punch in for recording and out again for noodling. The other pads are left for finger drumming, as seen in the video.
The standard volume control per track can be used to take out individual tracks (or bring them back in).
The guy in the video has a Patreon where he shares his projects, processes and the Kontrol Editor setup file.
