The Story of Drambo | As told by SEONN

Been a bit of a wait on this one. Apologies on that. Had a ton of side quests coming my way, and I lost a ton of footage, and files.

So, here we are. Let's get back into the app game. No distractions...

Last we left off, we had covered Cubasis, Nanostudio, and Beatmaker 3. In search of the perfect DAW.

Cubasis 2

Cubasis 3

Nanostudio 2

Beatmaker 3
But what if the perfect DAW isn't a DAW at all, but a modular Groovebox?

This is going to be just ME looking at Drambo, and how I use it in my creative workflow.

So, let's get to work...whoosh.

Video: Coming soon...

Drambo is one of those apps that’s hard to describe because of its immense potential. It’s a platform that lets you design synthesizers, create effects, and build your own workflow. This flexibility makes it challenging to dedicate a single guide or tutorial to everything it can do.

The unique aspect of this thread is that it’s meant to be interactive. I’ll be sharing my perspectives on Drambo while also posting videos regularly. The goal is to create a space where content can be gathered, shared, and referred to for years to come.

Currently, I have a specific workflow with Drambo, but with all the updates rolling out, I anticipate it will evolve over time. Like my previous threads, I’ll continuously monitor and update this one to keep it fresh and relevant.

I also encourage other creators to start their own Drambo threads to share their unique experiences. By doing this, we can collectively expand the knowledge and possibilities of the app.

With that said, let’s dive in! First video drops tomorrow—stay tuned! Whoosh!!!

  • New video sounds good. I haven't cracked open Drambo since 2021. Think I'll make a New Year resolution to try Drambo again sometime in January.

Meanwhile I understand the struggle to find the perfect (for me) DAW. Nanostudio 2 is currently my favourite due to how stable it is, Slate and Obsidian, etc. What makes it imperfect is the lack of audio tracks. But Slate can handle long audio files, so I branch out vocal work to Cubasis 3.

Tried Cubasis 3 and Logic Pro to build a full track, and both didn't work out for me. I did not consider Beatmaker 3, but now that I see your vid, I will have to try that next once I finish my current EP.

This is surprising! Curious as to why that’s been?

This is surprising! Curious as to why that’s been?

The answer is simple, lol. I didn't have the patience to try and wrap my head around Drambo yet. And...back in 2021, the only automation in Drambo were the p-locks, which I didn't care for as my goal back then was to produce Ambient, not beat-based music. (Not to be confused with my "Summer of Ambient 2022", where GAS for the OP-1 Field led to me producing many mediocre Ambient pieces that don't hold a candle to Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, @Svetlovska and other talented Ambient producers in this forum).

But, I'm interested to finally dive into Drambo next year January. I have to finish my current EP to release on Friday, then start the December music challenge (which will be a holiday music challenge), and then I'm going to work on what I plan to be an 8-10 track Pop/Dance album. In addition to performing quite a few holiday piano gigs and starting my second job as a caregiver.

I figured the patience part lol. It seems like you get an idea and want to get it on wax (digitally I mean) but rather than fiddle which I totally get. Didn’t want to assume! The automation in Drambo is so nice! I got the app in June 2023 and only really got to know it lately. I think it will click for you this go around.

Is this on SoundCloud? I’ll check it if so. @Svetlovska is dope! Honestly I get a lot of inspiration from their work and comments within this forum.

I don’t mind Eno but I listened to their collab album with Fred again.. which is ambient and I just couldn’t vibe with it which is weird. I should re check their catalog.

I don’t know Tangerine Dream but I’m checking now! Thank you.

Stoked for Fridays release! Fuck I gotta finish the 4 track challenge. I actually do have my most structured music I’ve made this year in Drambo so that challenge helped me a ton. Just gotta get over myself and actually upload 😅

I love dance music. Any inspo you’re planning on drawing from for this project?

I’m going to go full on into modular (MiRack) and make some techno next month. Got really inspired by Floating Points latest album Cascade - Vocoder (Club Mix) is willlllld and I wanna make music like this lol.

Congrats on the piano gigs and the second job!

I think so too. :) Even if I don't use it as a modular synth environment and just use it to host other AUv3s, I think I'll have loads of fun with Drambo.

I have the Ambient on Soundcloud, but it's mostly buried, lol. This is my favourite of the bunch.

As it actually tells a story. Tangerine Dream is amazing. Brian Eno is one of the OGs of Ambient. So is David Lynch. Also check out Boards of Canada. Svetlovska is indeed incredible at what she does. :)

Do it. Do it do it do it, lol. Can't wait to hear your entry. :) And, there is no deadline for the challenge.

I love dance music. Any inspo you’re planning on drawing from for this project?

I love dance music too. For the next album, I'm going to draw from various Electro Pop producers such as RedOne, Max Martin, Greg Kurstin, etc. I.E. those who produced Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kesha, Sia, etc. I may mix those inspos in with a touch of Deadmau5, David Guetta, etc.

Congrats on the piano gigs and the second job!

    Thanks mate.

Also, apologies to @seonnthaproducer for the topic veering off course so quickly. x'D

It’s weird but I overthink it. I’ll do it. I’m going to. I have to!

Let me know what you think! I’m fairly certain it’s modular and could be recreated within Drambo.

Two ADHD musicians wander into a forum thread …… I’m blanking on the rest 😅😂
    Apologies @seonnthaproducer

You think your ADHD is bad? I forgot to check the link you posted above, because I just got through mastering and sequencing the EP. It's all ready to upload to SoundCloud matter of fact, lol. Yeah, got distracted by a shiny object. Now it's time to lay me down to sleep. G'night mate.

I would trade your adhd hyper focus on CREATING 100% rather than adhd procrastination bullshitting. 😅

    Night🙏🏽

  • All good @jwmmakerofmusic
This thread is aimed to be interactive, so I really appreciate you and @offbrands sharing your experiences.

Here’s the first video. There’s no screen recording. It serves as an introduction

But here’s a clip showing a unique use of Drambo. For scratching...

    https://youtube.com/shorts/JR9elcOrJS8?si=zJuOG7F3d-UAH3v-

I'll make a detailed post on these topics in a bit. But for now, happy travels and thanksgiving.

  • That use of the speed knob is rather clever mate. :)

    Back to it…

This has been my bread and butter for creating cool instruments in Drambo.

MIDI TO CV + LAYERS MIXER + AMP ENV ADSR

In the Layers Mixer section, simply add whatever you want to add from the Generator sector

I can load AUV3 in one of the layers, or choose to add sounds from sampler

I am also able to add sounds from other sources and combine them . To do this, tap the plus icon and it will create a new number in the Layers Page

In this example, I added a saw oscillator on 1, and noise on the other. This combination makes the saw wave a LOT thicker and fuller.

Give it a go. There’s a lot of cool combinations you can do on Drambo. I’ll share my favorite ones on the thread as we go along.

  • Ok I’m sold..I’m getting this after Christmas ! Unless Santa gets it for me first 😆
