A Good Replacement Reverb for Quantec Room Simulator?

Okay, disclaimers.

  1. I don't have GAS. I'm just looking for a reverb AUv3 similar to Quantec, whether it's one I already have or not.

  2. Not here to gripe about subscription pricing for Logic Pro. 😂 So keep the pricing out of the discussion please. I'm also not here to troubleshoot Logic Pro, because I've made up my mind.

  3. I'm higher than Mt. Everest atm, so if I start to ramble, you've been warned in advance. 🤣 Scroll past the divider if you wish to read the question.

  4. I'm no longer an iPhone-only producer and use my Mini 7 for most of my production work (although I still like Garageband on iPhone for starting ideas), so iPad-only recommendations are fine.

Okay, Logic Pro, the "professional DAW" used by some of my favourite big-name producers like Paul Van Dyk, has turned into a big "professional" pain. (Granted, these producers use it on Mac, lol.) Today I was working in it, loaded two Flux Mini 2 plugins, and somehow Logic reset their parameters, forcing me to set up the plugins again.

I also mix into a limiter no matter what DAW I use, and Logic decided to reset the parameters of its own motherflipping limiter?! Not to mention a myriad of other issues I won't get into for the sake of brevity. I'm just so done with Logic Pro outside of its AI Mastering Assistant and Stem Splitting. 🤣

(I ended up using Nanostudio 2 to restart the track I tried to create in Logic Pro from scratch, and I used Logic Pro for its AI Mastering Assistant.)

That said, I'm looking for a reverb AUv3 that sounds similar to Quantec Room Simulator that I can use in other DAWs. I'm not sure if ToneBoosters' Reverb would fit the bill. I did end up using TB Reverb for the aforementioned track when recreating it in Nanostudio 2, and it sounds great. Far nicer than NS2's own algoverb imho. But what do you think regarding lush reverbs in similar vein to the Quantec? Which would you use and would recommend?

And if there are other threads about "lush reverbs" I may have missed, point me to them please. Thank you. :)

  • Would IRs be the best way then? Maybe there are algorithmic reverbs that can simulate Quantec. 😅

There's Relab QuantX and Savant Quantum for desktop, why not ask them?
Savant said they've optimized it for Apple M1 so that might be a good first step, if they're interested.
I'd trust the IRs more tbh, if I wanted the sound of the original hardware unit.

  • I doubt IR reverbs can come close to the quality I've been hearing with Quantec. It's some seriously sophisticated software. But there are tons of reverb options, so plenty of room for experimentation.

Fair. :) Well, if you yourself use the IRs, what convolution reverb plugin do you use these days which can load said IRs?

Yes, but say you didn't have access to the Quantec Reverb in Logic Pro, which reverb AUv3 would you reach for personally? :)

  • AltiSpace 2 has presets of the Quantec Room Simulator (QRS).

  • Fabfilter Pro R2 isn't half bad... probably one of the best verbs there is for iOS

Well, LP has a number of other reverb options, so I'd opt for those over reverbs in any other plugins at the moment. Chromaverb and Space Designer are also very, very good. They each have their own strengths.

Also, something I'm seeing more and more... with plugins the odds of a project breaking thanks to incompatibilities introduced by Apple's own software updates is becoming a larger risk these days. I'm trying to minimize the use of third party effects and keep it all in the Logic Pro family to make my projects more future proof. It's a huge headache suddenly discovering an old plugin no longer works and then I'm tasked with trying to duplicate something I spent too much time on previously.

I see Logic Pro as the 'final destination' for all of my projects these days.

I have so many reverbs but Pro R2 is the only really good one. Wait for sale cause its not really a cheap one.

It's my go-to in my desktop studio, so to have it on iOS as well is amazing.

  • @NeuM I understand that about Logic, but I used the same plugins in NS2 to restart and finish the project I was working on, and none of the plugins reset their parameters, whether older plugins or newer ones. 🫠 And I'm running NS2 on iOS 18.1. I don't mind minor bugs in a DAW, but when I dive deep into a project and the DAW resets plugin parameters, breaking my project six ways to Sunday, I no longer trust that DAW. Logic is still excellent for AI mastering and stem splitting, so I'm not deleting the DAW nor ending my sub. But, as far as I go personally, I'm back to NS2 until I can afford N-Track Pro (the paid version, not the sub version lol).

@Philandering_Bastard I'll definitely take a second look into AltiSpace 2 given it seems I've already purchased it and forgot about it. 😅 (I think I bought AltiSpace 2 when I switched to iPhone-only production, didn't like the way the UI worked on there, and forgot about it.) That said, I will say Igor makes some really stellar plugins, especially for Experimental and Ambient.

@Pxlhg @Famihix and @bluegroove Well, Pro-R2 is the only FabFilter plugin I don't own yet, lol. 😂 That said, it looks as though it's on a special Black Friday sale until 2 December, so I will purchase it as soon as I'm able before it goes back up in price. Guess I'll save N-Track Pro for another time. Lol.

Okay, so I have a budget of about 40 quid. I'm definitely going to finally get OneShot. However, I'm torn between Pro-R2 and N-Track Pro. One is a really baller reverb, but I have TB Reverb and have AltiSpace 2 with the Quantec IRs (thanks @Philandering_Bastard for pointing that out!). The other is a whole DAW that seems to be pretty simple to grok and has more routing options than Cubasis. Think I will dive into the latter to be quite honest.

Forgive me if I’m out of my element. But are you’re looking for a reverb that can load IRs? Or just out of the box sounds as good as Logics Quantec? I haven’t used Logic Pro but I know they have some really good stock tools.

I ask because, while new, WoodVerberator is really deep and sounds great. There was a minor issue when it first dropped and Woodman fixed it so quickly and was super communicative and got it sorted quickly. Left a great impression.

Worth looking up at minimum! I got an old Air 3 so my DSP jumps if I load literally anything lol but your new mini should handle it solidly if you do end up checking it out.

Plus it’s got this green vibe to it and it’s seems you’re into that 😜🙃

  • Logic is a complete pain until one day… it isn’t.

In my very humble opinion, nothing sounds like the Quantec room simulator. Amazing to think that the algorithms date back to 1982.

It has a different sound to the other high end reverbs of the 80s and 90s. It sounds less ‘synthetic’ than a lexicon for example. Lexicons still sound wonderful — just different.

When I first bought Logic Pro X for the Mac in 2014 (having used logic since the beginning) a Quantum Yardstick cost over $3k. The surround version cost over $7k.

And now it’s effectively inside logic for free.

It’s different sounding to most algorithmic reverbs. It sounds a little more like a convolution reverb but with the benefits of algorithm — you can edit and tweak it much more than you can with convolution and it’s very quick to dial in a sound.

There are some really nice reverbs around but there’s something very special about QRS. It sounds expensive.

As for resetting parameters, that's a pain in the arse for sure. I guess I've been lucky and not had that experience myself... I wonder what caused it?

At first was looking for "out of the box sounds" as good as Quantec, but it seems IRs are the way to go. I already have AltiSpace 2, so I wonder what Woodverberator has that's different (besides an easier-to-understand UI that is). For a niner, looks to be a solid solution to my reverb issue.

A green vibe? 😂 What's that mean? (I'm laughing. That's the funniest comment I've heard in a while.)

I agree that there's no algorithmic reverb which sounds like that Quantec plugin, but indeed the convolution reverbs may be the solution.

Maybe due to me working on an iPad Mini 7. 🫠 My Mini 7 started to become warm at one point during producing my first of two Logic tracks. Had I the same amount of layers and track in Nanostudio 2, it wouldn't heat up like it did. In fact, for the track I had to restart from scratch, I switched to NS2 no problems. But that was just one of a few issues with Logic Pro I had. Not looking to troubleshoot it as I'm done with Logic Pro outside of mastering. Two tracks already mastered, and I daren't try to open and render the unmastered versions.

it’s really good. Woodman is dope.

Another option - a thing I didn’t really take to heart was how much you can do with Drambo. I know like it was half a bit here for a while to always say Drambo as the answer, but I mean it’s just really true lol.

Sometimes there’s some ridiculous versions of that, like I like supporting developers and I like having an all in one app sometimes that’s done for me and I don’t want to build it. I ain’t building Hilda, DRC, or Nerd Synth in Drambo, nor would I want to! Yanno?

But for what you’re looking for this is trivial. Took me 5 minutes and most of that was downloading the IR’s from iCloud. Would have been done in a couple minutes, just browsing wav files.

If you’re loading IR’s, like from EchoThiefs site, try the Convolver in Drambo on a Send Channel (you have to add a graphic shaper to the end) with a reverb module at the end and boom bobs your uncle.

Add some automation and you could truly make something special

Only mentioning this because when I found out about this module I immediately became annoyed that I didn’t know about this first before going into a deep dive on IR, Convolution, and Reverb in general. One of those ADHD hyper focus many hours session 😅🙄

It’s not anyone’s fault but my own! But still. Figured I would share just in case you didn’t know.

That’s the problem with that app, I love getting into modularity of it. You finish songs and put that work in so I totally get wanting the already done one. Don’t sleep on WoodVerberator! YouTube some vids. It’s deep.

I think I will get WoodVerberator simply for the fact it's cheaper than Pro-R2, and my "big budget" app is going to be N-Track.
