So this is contemporary dark ambient? Kind of blows my mind that this has 60 million views. It's pleasant, it's neither very dark nor very ambient, tho, imo. The non-contemporary dark ambient guys called: they want their genre back 🤣 (sorry, couldn't resist)

This music does not even qualify to use the word dark.

Agreed, there's nothing dark about it whatsoever.

  • All genre is word salad now.

Which, y’know… as a lifelong appreciator of the surreal, strikes me as perhaps not all bad.

I don't mind that a word like ambient has deviated from its original meaning. That's fine, that's natural. But when a word like 'dark' starts being used to describe stuff that is not dark at all, that deserves a bit of pushback I reckon, right?

'That is shit' to 'That's the shit' ... maybe it is Nu-dark or Neo-dark ...Poldark?

  • Thing is too that social media definitely plays a role in that. I've hashtagged stuff 'ambient' that was not really that ambient, but which might have appealed to people who like ambient. On the other extreme, the term Lofi, for some people now, means something very very narrow indeed compared to the broader way many of us might use it. So yeah, these things will happen.

    This made me lol 🤣

  • I feel like we need to clear the air with a 'proper' bit of old-school dark ambient, a kind of virtual, aural smudge stick.
