Midi Sync Question (IElectribe + Samplr + Beatmaker)
hi all,
i know there is a bit of info out there already, but I haven't really found a comprehensive guide to getting two input instruments to sync properly when recording though audiobus to something like Garageband or Beatmaker 2. audiobus seems like a really cool idea, but until i can get everything lined up the way I can in Ableton, then it really isn't much use to me. i would absolutely love to have multiple drum patterns coming out of separate apps, and then somehow have them in sync as they record into an iOS DAW.
is that even possible? sorry -- i still understand very little about MIDI.
i've set the midi clock output on beatmaker to trigger ielectribe, but it still sounds a little off when i have BMs metronome turned on. i tried messing with the latency and that didn't fix the problem. furthermore, when trying to get beatmaker to set the tempo for IMS-20, it didn't seem to work at all, even though i have it set to send midi to them IMS-20 app listed inside the beatmaker 2 "midi out" control panel.
perhaps i'm missing something here. i've browsed around for hours and have found lots of questions but not any real solutions.
does anyone have any good ideas or methods, or am i simply stuck setting the BPMS up and then hoping i can hit the play button perfectly on time each time i want to record?
Comments
i'm assuming there's an underlying latency problem. all the apps will generate some latency due to processing time, but i doubt any of them actually share a common thread, in that there's no master control over this like a desktop DAW with VSTi's would have.
I'm just trying to send MIDI out of BM2 to iPolySix to trigger to single notes, but the iPolySix notes are all late. this is without AudioBus though (just background audio on iPSix), not sure if AudioBus improves on that?
i fired up beatmaker and set it to send midi to anamoog -- i had some arps patterns pre-recorded into a beatmaker maker midi track, and holy shit they sounded amazing.
on a side note, i just want to let everyone know that animoog is by far the raddest synth i've come across for ipad. it sounds incredible & i'm absolutely going to incorporate it into my hardware setup because the sounds are so rich and interesting.
anyhow, not a single bit of latency whenever i did this. i also set a channel to send midi to Magellen, and on the Magellen side set the clock to use the BM2 clock. again, no problems at all -- all the arps there were perfectly in time with what BM was playing. its just that I can't get BM2 to vibe with any of the Korg products (fucking Korg!), which is a shame about Ielectribe -- because i think this is a fantastic drum machine. there's nothing else on iOS that sounds like it. since then tho, I've purchased Animoog , and the effort of getting BM2 to talk properly to IMS-20 has been sidelined. shelving that one (AGAIN, ugh). i'll keep cracking at Ielectribe until I figure out what is causing the timing to be off.
another issue that I'm having is that whenever using BM2 as my "DAW" for output on the recordings, I start to hear weird crackling artifacts in the instruments that i'm using. that totally shouldn't be happening, as I'm using an Ipad 4. the cracking doesn't show up in the recorded sound, but its super annoying for monitoring. so for now I've just been setting everything up on the instrument side, using BM2 to sequence, and then recording into Garageband -- this is less than ideal, however, because the track editing inside Garageband isn't that great in my view -- for example, if my timing isn't exactly perfect, its hard for me to go back and edit the position of the recorded loop like I can in BM2.
for this reason, I'm currently exploring a separate iOS DAW. any suggestions on that?
anyhow. i'll keep posting as I work my way towards the ideal set up. there are still a couple of other variables I'd like to squeeze in --
cheers!
Necrothread, I know. Sorry. Just wondering if there's been any progress on this. It's 2015 now, and at least in my experience it's still Animoog=tight sync, Korg=not so much. If Moog can do it, why not Korg? Their products sound so damn good, it's a shame.
