Tips for programming hi hat one shots to sound not quantised - program them with quantise on, then turn off quantisation and nudge em off grid. I don't usually adjust velocity, but it may be another thing you can try in addition to nudging notes off grid.

If you have any other questions, let me know. Hope these couple of tips will help. If not, nothing wrong with loops. In fact, Loopy Pro excels at loops. :)

Thanks my man. I def nudge those hats all over the place but they still just seem to sound dry and lifeless in comparison to the human velocity and timings and ability to make each hit sound a lil different with the resonance, and different tensions on the HH pedal.
I normally use koala and the velocity helps… its just getting that swing and change in timbre is so much effort haha. Sometimes a one man show just needs a touch from another skilled musician haha.
I’ve had a few drummers come to my studio and record but my recording gear isn’t great for drums

Ah now I see. Maybe someone else can confirm, but I believe OneShot has round robins. :)

Yes I does. It would make the hihat sound less robotic.

Have you looked a midi drums packs ? It could be a solution. You get them to trigger one shot.

This free midi pack as some hihat specific midi. I don't know your style of music so I picked this one.

    Hi,
    An old story...apologies.

No apologies. I genuinely loved it. Thanks for sharing.

Its a subject that people have written whole articles on esp in the old days of midi.
An article that, for me, changed the whole way I looked at programing drums, was called the Feel Factor in sound on sound and electronic musician. Was from the late eighties I think. It actually changed the industry IMHO. This before any kind of groove quantization was available. I think the authors last name was Stewart. But I have old timers:-)

I think I found the article (you made it very easy to find. Thank you)

A Guide to Programming Music with Soul

I purchased OneShot soon after I wrote that above reply, lol. It has round robins and so many other advanced features I haven't seen in other drum machine apps to date. OneShot definitely set the bar high.

Yes it does! Best on iOS. I used it on my Halloween song with a library of midi beats. I think it sounds pretty good.

I use Helium to browse the midi library and then drop them in Cubasis timeline.

  • I’m looking at lumbeats hiphop drummer as recommended in this thread since its on sale.

Can you midi out lumbeats apps to Oneshot? I dig the samples in oneshot but i haven’t really messed with it much for sequencing yet.. might grab hh drummer tho if i can send it to OS.

Thanks yall for all the replies as well. Its been a busy week and i haven’t got to respond to all but its much appreciated

Not to veer too offtopic, but I'm starting to delve deeper into Cubasis. 😅

Back to topic, OneShot is amazing. I can load multiple samples onto one pad, prune the ones I don't need, and go from there. :)

Edit - Oh wait, the actual topic was of programming hi hats. 😂 I need coffee.

I say don't bother, unless you love IAA hell. 😈 This summer I tried to work with Drum Session. Never again IAA.

My favorite perc app is audiothings hand clapper or clap machine or something. It’s like 2.99 rn, it has some super high quality hats and u can import your own samples. It is the most superior ratcheting mechanic that I have found on iOS, use it in all my shit. I gatekept that sucka for years.

If you like automated, ratcheted percs- this is a beast for under 5 bucks.

I did mention it’s a one shot sampler too?

Another trick I use is the king key typewriter in mod view, Throw some king key reverb on it- you have acoustic sounding percs. I use this in conjunction with my primary drum channel, and hand clapper on the bass channel (it makes sense when u hear it).

Haha i don’t really care about iaa for this, im just going to sample the loops and add them in as audio. Let’s not honest, its a hip hop drummer that beats don’t change that much in a song to leave the app running like they do when I'm making more down tempo ambient.
I sample or render all my tracks to audio to build tracks and work with lots of hardware. This is just another piece of the fun puzzle

Never would a thought to look at an app called hand clapper lol but I’ll check it

  • using pads like the ones on push 3 are excellent to input hats. use the push repeat function to get variation then just choose a few of the recorded hats to use in the final pattern.
