Ideas for composers out there
David Bruce channel has been an incredible source of inspiration over the years. After discovering his channel I happily unsubscribed to a bunch of useless channels, like Beato's for exemple.
This video he just released might be one of my favourite of his. With a very didactic and beginner friendly approach, He is offering 53 tricks to help you get your music to unexpected places using "Chopsticks". No MIDI generative apps or shitty AI, just you and your brain.

I'm shocked nobody responded to this thread yet. Then again, the holiday season is a rather busy time of year (at least in the Western world, more specifically the US lol). Most of that precious time is wasted on decorations that'll end up being thrown out and buying gifts that children will become bored with after 5-10 minutes.
At least my time is mostly spent refreshing the holiday music I play on piano. The more in the "holly jolly" I seem, the more tips I make. 🤣 That said, I finally had the chance to sit down and watch the video in full. Very inspiring indeed, and I'll rewatch it soon and take notes this time around.
I mean, Beato's channel isn't entirely useless? See, if you're the type who likes to waste their time doomscrolling, or watching an old man shout at the sky, Beato's channel is perfect. 😂 Of course you won't really learn anything from it other than what the latest trends in Western Pop charts are, why Rick thinks older music is better, guests who agree with him (aka his "echo chamber" if you will), and other loaded rubbish. 🤣
I agree that David's didactic approach is refreshing, and again. Well worth my time to rewatch it and take notes the second time around.
This sentence is probably why people didn't reply to this thread. The reason is - it does come off a bit like Rick Beato shouting at clouds. 😂 But, at least there are valid reasons, which are different from Rick Beato's loaded "reasonings". See, AI is a double-edged sword. It can help enhance one's own creativity, such as Scaler 2. In other ways, it's detrimental, especially when it comes to copyright.
Quite frightening to be honest. AI has grown so much the past couple of years to the point there's no going back. I believe new copyright laws and amendments should be put into place to protect the real content creators from having their original works taken down, simply because their original work could sound similar to some AI-generated rubbish.
That said, I do find Ocean's channel to be inspiring and informative.
Tell me you're in the US without telling me you're in the US.
Hard to put the veil back on that one.
Thanks for turning me on to this channel!
This thread reeks of moral posturing.
Everybody is guilty, including myself.
Thanks for the share @JanKun !
Lol! I'm sure other countries in Western society have their fair share of wasting time on a bunch of "holly jolly" nonsense, but yeah. The US is definitely the leader in consumerism.
Wasn’t it Victoria’s husband, Albert, who brought a tree into the palace and got the whole shebang going?
I find it’s crazy that people actually put themselves into debit (or increasing their debit) to cover holiday spending
I agree. Ridiculous waste of money to be fair. The holidays should be about families coming together to celebrate whatever holiday suits them, but without all the extra wasted spending on needless rubbish. 😂 My family so happens to celebrate Christmas. Whenever one of them asks me what I want, I say "a gift card for the supermarket, please."
Glad you found the video informative!
I probably expressed myself a bit harshly with my last sentence. I am sorry if people got offended by it and if it stopped them from watching. I didn't mean to be offensive or blaming people. There are tools available, people are free to use them. I am not trying to tell what people should do. I just found the video fascinating cause it shows incredibly well how keys and 2 fingers can go a very long way. With all this Technology we tend to forget what an incredible machine our brain is. It is like a muscle, it needs training. And it is rewarding to use it regularly. I haven't used a MIDI generative apps to generate chord progression for years, and I don't feel the need to. For music production, I use AI for acoustic drums and mastering in Logic. It is a gain of time and it boosted my output and I am grateful for that. But I am against the AI taking the creative part in the creative process which is what happens with the current state of AI generative. These days, prompts don't give you full control over the result, there's always machine bias and interpretation limited by the corpus the machine was trained on. The day the user will have full control to tweak every single detail of what is generated, AI will have become the greatest creative tool given to us. It's not there yet, but hopefully this day will come.
Anyway I don't want this thread to go the AI way. There are already too many on this forum. This video is great and in a way, a celebration of what human brain can achieve with a bit of work, study and imagination. That's why I shared it in the first place hoping some will enjoy it. Thanks for commenting
You're welcome mate. I just wanted to bump the thread up so that David's video can be seen. And yeah, AI is not quite there yet, but perhaps someday it will be there. Most likely it will.
Meanwhile, not to derail the thread too far, but JimAudio has a new Groovebox/DAWlike app forthcoming if that's your sort of thing. Also, did you see the new semi-modular released by @brambos ? The sound is utterly filthy in the best ways, so might be worth your while.
