Clockwork in the Clouds

This is a piece of music that is meant to describe my confusion and reordering of information during periods of suffering with head pains.

Due to the subject, it is a sometimes disjointed piece and not easy listening music.

I envisage floating through clouds of confusion to the centre of my brain where a clockwork engine is trying to sort out the information of life. The confusion is a live entity wishing me harm. The piece is in three distinct parts:

  1. Travelling through the clouds of confusion. While disorienting, there are bits of beauty on the journey.
  2. The centre brain organising.
  3. Travelling back through the clouds with the musical parts in a slightly different order to show some reordering of information.

The sax parts throughout are the confusion entity trying to effect the any ordering.

  • Nice suite with lots of interesting parts. There are always a lot of different ideas going on in your tracks.

    Thank you for listening :)

I think in part my tracks are a bit chaotically laden with ideas due to my illness - my brain is pretty much constantly feeling tried, drained and confused from disjointed sleeping patterns. As I spend quite a bit of my days and night in either pain or recovery, I feel I’m having to make up for lost time. I tend to lose ideas quickly due to my brain struggling to retain information, so I often hurriedly throw in as many ideas as I’m having at one time.

The other issue is I’ve virtually thrown away any adherence to the sort of rules and structures we learn as we grow up. I spent so long wanting to be able to make songs with hooks and music with the sort of structure that could be popular, that I never got anything finished - I was basically trying to make myself be something I’m not! I now make music exactly how I feel it at the time and worry little about needing to hook someone in within so many seconds, or the track being too long, or requiring certain structure to the piece - I make stuff, construct parts and see where it goes - I am definitely aware that my tracks have things that make them not as appealing to the majority of listeners.

  • I think it’s the lack of adherence to rules that make it so appealing, very enjoyable 👍

  • So sorry that you are experiencing… wait… I just heard that funky bass at 4:38. Very cool and unexpected. This is like getting my car at 2:00am and just going driving. Getting back to your head issues… those are really annoying. My wife suffers from those. You’re not alone. I had a real motherfucker yesterday and called in sick. Feeling a bit better today. I really like this. Back in college we would say… It’s a Jam!!!… and we would twist up a big fat one.

Yep it’s definitely a journey, but the music making sure helps :)
