[Advice] AirPods versus AirPods Pro 2 - day-to-day use, (not music production) from iOS music gurus
Some good sales on AirPods this week. Finally time for me to take the plunge. I don’t really want to use them for music production. I want to use them for a day-to-day life… Calls, listening to music, Etc.
What do the iOS music experts here recommend?
Comments
I like my Pros but they have some limitations. The biggest one is that they pick up every little sound around you while you're using them for phone calls. I've had to stop using them for this purpose because everyone complains about how noisy my space sounds.
Despite that, I like them much more than standard Airpods. I've used in-ear monitor style headphones for many years so I'm used to the sealed feel and sound.
They're ok for jamming.
I love the Pro 2's, the transparency and noise cancelling modes are way better than I expected. I also use foam tips from Comply for even more isolation and better sound/fit. Good for music listening too, I honestly prefer them over a lot of my wired headphones. Not the best, but damn good enough for the convenience. I know you don't want to use them for music making, but if there was a low-latency way of using them with music apps I'd have no issues doing it and knowing I was getting decent quality.
Wow, I would’ve hoped they have better noise cancellation. That’s said, FaceTime has worse noise cancellation than Google meet.
Thanks, @Tarekith, hope all is well. And, well I am not thinking of using them for music production, you can use them with loopers and step sequencers and stuff like that where latency is not as much of an issue.
Also, film and game soundtracks.
Have you experienced the issues other people have with poor background noise cancellation for other people on calls?
No, never had an issue with background noise on calls here. Probably 80% of my phone calls are made with the Pro 2's, no one has ever commented on it.
I'm with you on this. Especially the noise-cancelling aspect (and also use Comply foam tips to enhance their effectiveness/comfort).
But for sound quality, I far prefer my Sony WF-1000xm (gen 3 to 5). I own all three between gen 3 and 5 and whilst the noise-cancelling has improved in each generation, I find myself most often heading for my gen 3's for the sound quality and I use them most often without noise-cancelling.
However, the reason I end up using my Pro 2's most often overall, is that nothing can beat the Apple genius of seamlessly transferring your listening from iPhone to iPad to laptop & desktop. That's one of the best examples of Apple devices simply working without any effort from the user. I've always thought the most undervalued aspect of being an Apple customer, is the ecosystem, and how it all feels like a single unified experience when it's working at the best of its abilities.
I know you aren’t asking about these, but I would just chip to agree with what Jon said above. I have been extremely happy with my Sony WF1000xm4 earbuds. Those sound really excellent. I think tho that the latency might not be quite as good as the Pro 2’s when using with Apple Products, from what I remember reading. Reviewers all praised the sound of the WF1000Xm4, more so than the newer xm5 ones actually. Since they are no longer the latest iteration, I’m sure they can be got for very reasonable prices now.
AirPods can have a lot of issues, from normal human ear build up, to random bass rambling messing up the audio for good for literally no reason.
I’ve replaced several with Apple over the years. All kinds of different models. Each time through Apple with AppleCare and each time they did their diagnostic test they would fail. Two of the times I went in where one was messed up and when they checked both they both failed lol.
I went with a pair of over the ear last year after years of messing with AirPods, Bluetooth and headphone port available. Mine aren’t the Sony ones @Gavinski mentioned but his recommendation should be considered! Those are constantly spoken highly of.
If you still end up wanting AirPods at minimum make sure you get AppleCare if you end up going that route. You won’t regret that at least. One of those care purchases for $30 got me 3(!!) free exchange's on the original pros.
Can you still get AppleCare when NOT buying direct from Apple?
Great q I really don’t know. I believe some retailers have it like Best Buy in the states and others don’t.
Kool 👍
Call them and find out. If you’ve already made your purchase you might need a product ID or something.

i had the airpod pros and used them for casual use. they were good but my biggest gripe was the battery life. i ended up using them one ear at time to keep my music listening as continuous as possible for as long as possible. for every day casual listening and occasional calls, i moved on to the shokz open run bone conduction headphones. they are a small step down in sound quality but a big step up in battery life.
