Playing with a 5/4 jazz beat (pianoteq, bass, sessionband drums, Korg iM)
I made this 4-track song as a possible for the November 4-track challenge, but submitted something else instead. Thought might as well share this leftover song here anyway.
Started by playing piano over a 5/4 groove in sessionband jazz 4, made a simple song out of it.
Track 1: pianoteq 8
Track 2: an electric bass soundfont
Track 3: SessionBand jazz 4 drums 5/4 beat
Track 4: a keyboard sound from Korg iM1.

Nice little happy jazzy song 😍 congrats! 🙏
BTW which patch you used in iM1?
Thanks! I think it is the ‘Sympathy’ preset from the SYNTH 3 card.
Ok cool😎, THX for the info🤩
This has a great vibe to it!
Thanks, @Blipsford_Baubie. It’s still in ‘idea sketching’ mode, but I may make more of an arrangement out of this tune, maybe use steel drums to give it an island taste.
Cool track.
Good vibes.
Flo
That is fun. Has a Chick Corea vibe to it. Thank you for sharing it.
I love it! Amazing.
Can I ask you wich bass soundfont are you using? It sounds really good.
Funny you mention that, because i had almost made a comment about it sounds like if Jimmy Buffet would have done jazz.
This would fit in perfectly in a Charlie Brown animated Black Friday TV special in the style of the great Vince Guaraldi who wrote the “Linus Theme” and “Cast Your Fate to the Wind”.
Definitely worth further effort. It would be interesting to see how average dancers would interpret 5/4 patterns. I’m sure most would just bob along with the quarter note pulse.
Nicely done!
That’s what it’s come to isn’t it 🤦🏼♂️
Cast Your Fate to the Wind was the first record I ever bought when I was about 8-9.
Great use of Session Band! I love using the horn players over my own stuff. Volume 4 has a guy named Patrick Clahar. He plays some nice riffs. I might try using a 5/4 beat with some straight time horn riffing. That could be interesting… or not! Only one way to find out. Thanks for the idea. Nice track!
Thanks so much, @flo, @aufde, @Alexa, @Blipsford_Baubie, @McD, @MrStochastic, @Paulieworld.
Alexa, I’m not sure now what bass sound I ended up using, the SoundFonts AU I use seldom remembers my preset after closing for some reason (maybe the recorders problem) so I have to reset the sounds when I re-open my recording app. I was going through a bunch of bass sounds, and I remember it was a jazz fretless bass, probably in the fluid soundfont (free version).
Paulineworld, I’m surprised how little the SessionBand apps are used here, they can be so useful. I mainly use them for a drum track, but you are right, they have some great horn licks that can be used. I wish I could build drum tracks with the lumbeat apps in the same way. I really need to figure out how, lumbeat drums sound great. Thanks for listening. Hope you have a happy thanksgiving (my wife will let me off the diet for turkey day).
My wife just bought some “store bought” kimchi in a glass jar. The label says it’s a Probiotic Powerhouse. The label also warns the end user that it’s “SPICY”. It really is! Loving it. Good luck with the veggie diet. I love meat, but I can get along without it… for now.
Nicely done, Dave. Keep it up, bro.
@Paulieworld, yes kimchi is full of probiotics. The longer it ferments the more kick it gets. My wife buys gallon size jars of it at the Korean grocery. When she opens it up I can tell it no matter where I am in the house. Thanks for listening @LinearLineman. Happy T-day to both of you. We’re enjoying it at myrtle beach this year.
Sorry I’m late to the party, what a great upbeat piece of music. I’m enjoying trying to play along with it.
It would make a great candidate for the collaboration thread that’s been mooted recently 👍
Somehow I missed this from last month. What a wonderfully jazzy number. Totally agree with the Chick Corea comment. So smooth.
I missed it too at first. Lovely song! Somewhat reminds me of Dave Grusin's Mountain Dance.
I love fives, I should play them more often.
A really nice, happy vibe to this piece.
Very cool.
Thanks for listening, @GeoTony, @NeuM, @rs2000, @pedro and @Gravitas! I had already forgotten this track, lol. After my Christmas concerts are all over I will redo this one, can’t stand how sloppy I was playing here. @rs2000, the Grusin brothers definitely have been an influence on me, always liked their work. I like to share this Grusin link with my jazz bros…
I forgot to mention the pianoteq preset I’ve been using for these type tracks: it’s the ‘Bosendorfer VC Jazz Recording’. I find I don’t have to tweak that one much to make it stand out. I will put a compressor and LUXE on it, sometimes more, but that preset sounds pretty decent for a solo piano piece.
Wow, thanks a lot for this video @Dav, this is like a jam session with musicians from a christmas wishlist 😃
