I give up on IOS Vocoders

So I have what I would consider all of the top rated vocoders on iOS, they all suck.

Like all of them.

I NEED an access virus vocoder rack app or something.

The sound I’m trying to replicate is Wumpscut’s. Wreath of Barbs. I know this was a rack unit with several filters.

There’s this dope app that you can type in what you want to emulate and it suggests an iOS app (seriously)

I cba to look at my home screen to assist, but yall know what it is- that app has referred me to shit I can’t even get in the USA. lol

  • COH:

The App is called: Find that sound (free)

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/find-that-sound/id6469339032

Looks like some of the klevgard European stuff just isn’t accessible.

It did mention Jubal flute tho, lol-

  • You can probably Do-This-With-Drambo™

Logic also has a decent Vocoder, one with built in synth and another that lets you use any carrier and modulator. As you can use your own carrier and choose the number of bands you should be able to get pretty much any vocoder sound you want with it.

I have been using Logic's vocoder for yonks. It's still my favourite go-to vocoder.

You can check out some of my tunes for plenty of examples of it in action if ya like (money where mouth is and all that). "Lies" is probably a good example of Logic's vocoder in action. :)

That LiES beat is nice man- it’s even wreath of barbsesque.

Still not able to get the sound I’m looking for. “Daydreams in blue”uses the same hardware- when you speak thru the mic, the words just don’t enunciate properly, it all sounds like shit. Mine.

In wreath and and daydream all of the vocoder words are properly heard, and this isn’t just mastering- I feel like it’s an input problem. It’s also 4am and I’m geeked.

You got a new fan brother. We’re all vibin to your album on Bandcamp. Really good stuff man.

If yall like industrial, peep dudes album burnout.

I should have previewed the whole album b4 responding, the exact sound I’m looking for is the Vox on Rain Dance

  • I found Der Voco very good for vocoding and even used it live but I don’t know the precise effect you’re after.

You could experiment with adding filters with envelope followers in Drambo pre or post vocoder to see if it gives you desired results?

Thanks for the kind words! I'm really glad you like my music.

The vocoder on Rain Dance is all Logic EVOC 20. The key is to process the vocal so it cuts the way you want, all you really need for the is compression and EQ. You can go very heavy handed on it as it's only a modulator signal.

The original vocals on rain dance were from the singer in my old band, so it's not me singing. Which is why it's bette than the others lol. A good vocal take, even when you can't sing, makes a difference.

A lot of mine would have been recorded on an iPhone mic!

  • Hopefully Baby Audio brings Humanoid to iOS soon.

Can’t help with the vocoder, but thanks for bringing Wampscut to my attention. Only good use of vocoder (usually definition of cheese) I’ve heard since Daft Punk. I also like that he is only four years younger than me! :)

Logic vocoder is a lot better than I thouhght.

What about imonsters daydream in blue? Anyone know what vocoder process was used?

  • My main vocoder a few years ago was Logic, but even that is a lot less usable than I think it should be, and a lot of time was spent not vocoding the way I demanded it to – there’s a lot of possibility of vocoding too differently to my intentions

In the end I got a Roland E-4 utter buggerer or whatever they call it, and that’s almost guaranteed to be outputting something much closer to what I intend, with not all that very much patting into shape required, it just vocodes the way I like

Here’s a song with vocoding on the E-4 as the main vocals (I know you’re not my target audience (ie you all make music yourselves rather than idolise my very image and make me rich and famous) (although I wouldn’t turn that down)) but here is the result, and as part of my vocoding style, I tend to blend a straight voice track with a vocoded voice track, the straight one is background and supporting, at a lower level, the vocoded one is the main component of the vocal mix, but I find it helps legibility to just add some real vocals along with it, and not just a copy but another take entirely running alongside :

  • Roger Troutman wasn’t using a vocoder but a talkbox (Golden Throat) with a DX100 as the sound source (preset: Hard Brass).

@thesoundtestroom recorded an excellent tutorial on using the vocoder in Logic Pro for Ipad:

  • Yeah, I’m really surprised with @klownshed utilization of logics vocoder. I clearly have more to learn.

I was going to procure apesofts sparkle, I’ve heard is kinda vocodish.

Sparkle will take a source sound spectrum and imposes it on a target sound. It can be vocodish but the sound you’re after doesn’t come from a vocoder. See above.

  • Here is one using Melovox as a vocoder

  • Thanks everyone, I hope this helps anyone looking for vocoded chains/apps, process or whatever.

Ironically enough, I was inspired to try ivoxel again, and I shit you not- I immediately got the sound I was looking for- just enabled the mic and let riffer roll the notes, absolutely perfect.

So- what I’ve learned this far: I need to learn more.

    Thanks again everyone

Did you try GSDSP Magic Fusion ? I am curious about that one.

And also Synthmaster as a built in vocoder.

Yeah, the carrier signal makes a big difference in what kind of sound you get. Using a narrow-width oscillator pulse waveform and a little EQ here and there is worth a try.

By the way, I've built an analog vocoder emulation a while ago, trying to get closer to the sound of vintage analog vocoders:

  • My favourite vocoder is indeed Der Voco, and my favourite synth to use as a carrier is Cubasis' own Micrologue. If you use Cubasis 3 @ejacul337 where you can group the carrier and modulator and slap on Der Voco , that could be a good combo.
