iOS 18 - cpu spikes with apps loaded in mixer

Has anyone else been having issues with different apps glitching out? I am using a new Air 2024 (M2). For example, just now Grand Finale 2 was using over 50% DSP, and Bouncebud was also pushing past 50%.
On my previous 9th Gen iPad with iOS 17, Grand Finale never did this.

Is there actual audio glitching? When not much is gong on CPU% is not very meaningul...the OS may detect low demand and throttle down the CPU and wait till there is more demand to unthrottle the CPU. This can be especially noticeable on fast machines.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, it ends up with glitchy audio and Grand Finale crashing.
I should add that this is happening when I'm recording with the Loopy Pro recording feature. The DSP starts off at around 36% then progressively gets higher until it glitches out.

I also I've been getting some other issues with other apps suddenly not working in the mixer, and some effects 'Whiting out' at different times when recording. These are effects that used to work fine on my older iPad (Modnetic, BlackHole, Koala, etc.)

Is there a setting that I should be adjusting?

What specific iOS18 version? Buffer size? using an interface?

Thank you for your response. I didn't think to check buffer size. It was set at "256" and so I just changed it to "512". Hopefully that will make a difference.
    I'm using iOS version 18.0.1
My interface is a Zoom AMS-44, however when recording in Loopy Pro (and when I'm getting these issues) I'm only using the interface as a monitor.
I am using a usb-to-midi cable into my hub to play a midi keyboard. My hub is a "uni USB C to USB Hub with 100W PD-in".

Needing a buffer that large on that iPad surprises me. I’d remove some of the plugins from the workflow to see if one of them is the culprit.

What sample rate are you running at?

    Have you rebooted your iPad?

  • I’m guessing the latest security update is causing havoc for these apps. Developers may need to update them.

I'm using 24bit at 48kHz. I reboot this iPad a lot. Especially when I'm having trouble. Well, I'll be sad to have to remove some plugins. That's kind of why I wanted to see what others are experiencing.

    Plugins used on this project:
    Eventide Blackhole
    Modnetic
    Frostbite2
    Wires
    UA Tails
    Other Desert Cities
    Grand Finale 2
    Wurly
    Speldosa
    Healing Bowl
    K7D
    Bouncebud
    Koala Sampler

  • But when I remove Grand Finale 2, the DSP drops by 50% - that's what I've found. And this app did not do that when I used it on my older iPad.

This is my concern. Have you had any issues with the above apps?

I don’t mean delete from your device. I mean delete from a copy of your project to troubleshoot.

I recently got an iPad Air M2 and run iOS 18.x and run with a small buffer.

If Grand Finale is causing a huge spike, I’d contact the developer. I’ve not had any reports indicating general significantly increased CPU usage in Loopy Pro.

  • @tubespace : you might want to update to the latest ios 18 update.

Also, if Siri is on, turn it off. If it is off, turn it on, reboot and turn it off again.

I understood your first intention. Thank you. What I'm seeing is more than just the one app. I was getting problems before loading Grand Finale, as well. So avoiding certain apps without finding the root cause would be a sad situation.

I'm not saying it's Loopy Pro, but at the moment, I cannot perform live with this - constantly playing a game of 'find the runaway memory/processing problem app' while trying to create on the fly.
I never activated Siri on this iPad yet. I could try your suggestion to see.

I guess I could export my loops as samples and run them in AUM and try the same apps, as well, just to be sure.

I will post a video of what this looks like. What is the file size limit for posting videos in this forum?

The video limit here is tiny. I would upload to YouTube as unlisted and post a link.

I haven’t had that exact issue, but I have seen increased sluggishness in a number of my plugins and the security update looks like a good suspect.

Update - so increasing the buffer has seemingly solved the DSP spike/glitching out issue. That's good news.
But the "white-out" app issue seems to be a separate problem. It happens when I adjust level and feedback in delay apps in Loopy Pro. Maybe someone has a solution?

Here it is when using AudioThing Wires (starting at 0:25):

And again here when using Modnetic:

  • @tubespace : did you see my suggestion about updating the OS to the latest iOS 18? 18.1 has been better for me than 18.0.1

I will try this. Thank you

  • I'm still getting the "white-out" problem even with the iOS 18.1. I guess I'll have to live with it. Not sure if this is an iOS issue or what. Seems to be some sort of graphics problem, because the sound isn't affected. Although if I turn my iPad sideways, I get a short audio crackle or pop (only on the first rotation.)
