Stand alone USB Midi Host (CME H4MIDI WC)

I have just received a shiny new H4MIDI WC from CME. This is a very small form factor USB MIDI host with 2 x 5 PIN MIDI In's and Outs, and a USB A port which supports up to 8 devices connected via a USB Hub.
I was lucky enough to get in on the first run of 1000 units at a knock down price (£45/$49).

I am really impressed by this little unit and it has transformed my setup.

Previously I was trying to run 3 versions of my setup,
Standalone HW
iOS Based
Desktop Based

Switching between these setups usually required some sort of recabling, and some functions I could only do when using a host and were not possible using the HW only setup.

I had attempted to use only 5 Pin MIDI in order to have a more static setup in terms of cabling but that had it's own issues, particularly with routing multiple devices and MIDI clock being involved as well it added another complication. Some routes I just could not make, like sending MIDI from both Launchkey and Circuit to a VolcaFM, it was one or the other and recabling to switch.
Another function I wanted was MIDI Translation to enable me to use in particular an RD6 to send MIDI to Novation Circuit and record drums (The main reason for this wish is the Accent lane that you have on the RD6, far easier to use than manually bumping the velocity on multiple pads on the multiple tracks on circuit.) I did this using a mosaic script, but couldn't be bothered to create an equivalent on my windows based desktop, so use of this was restricted to iOS only.

The H4MIDI WC has resolved these issues for me.

As it is a USB Host, I can now connect my devices using USB cables instead of the 2 x 5 PIN and a power lead for each device.
The H4MIDI WC has an on board MIDI Router and Filter so I can route MIDI between devices as I want to.
Onboard MIDI Mapping allows me to setup the RD6 how I want to.

All working nicely in a HW only setup.

When I want to use either iOS or the desktop all I now need to do is connect the H4MIDI WC and that's it. The MIDI devices connected to the H4MIDI WC can be routed to any of 4 virtual MIDI ports which are then available in the OS.

You can install the WIDI Core module from CME into the device to add WIDI capability too if you so wish.

The Unit also acts as a MIDI merge and/or a MIDI Thru.

All of that for the bargain price of £45/$49, usual price is something like £65/$69. They have a second batch of 1000 units available at the reduced price. Even at full price it is cheaper than some merge units.

Configuration of the device is done using their HxTools application which is currently available for Windows and MacO/S. an iOS version is in development at the moment.

I would highly recommend this device to anyone considering a MIDI THRU or Merge box, and also to anyone having issues with cabling or routing or just needing a USB host.

Thanks for sharing. Didn't know about this. Been exploring different ways to connect everything - but now I have the solution. Cheers
BTW: I bought it before writing this (but realised I forgot to mention it!)

  • Thank's for the tip!😊

  • Xmas stocking filler I think!
