Newbie question - pausing and resuming a clip from where you paused it

Hello all, had a question regarding create basic transport controls for a single clip if anyone had some insight. Here's what I have done:

  • Created 5 clips, each with a seperate full song loaded in them (use case - for practicing these songs on guitar)
  • Allow them to play at their natural tempo (achieved by global clip setting "time fitting: none" / ignoring the clock)
  • Setup the ability to scrub through clips to find a particular spot (achieved with one of those donut sliders linked to "adjust clip playhead")

And stuck on what I thought might be the easiest bit - I don't know how to pause a clip and resume from the same spot! Have tried

  • creating a button called stop which a) saves the current playhead value and b) stops the clip
  • create a button called resume which a) restores the playhead value and b) plays the clip

But it is going back to the start of the clip for some reason. Sure Im missing something obvious, (hoping this is a basic setting that doesn't need follow actions etc?)

Any thoughts on either a) the play / pause / resume functionality or b) a better way to achieve basic transport controls for a single clip would be appreciated.

Does the global transport need to play while the clip is paused?

  • Nope! (more than happy to pause the global transport if this helps achieve this)

If you long-press on the transport’s play button, you can turn off reset playhead n stop in which case it acts as pause/resume

Or, you can create a button and add the toggle clock pause action and turn off the reset timeline option. That button will act as pause/resume for the transport and the main play/pause button can reset like normal.

For individual clips, one has to get tricky by creating a button that save’s the playhead position and another that plays the clip and immediately restores the playhead position.

  • I've just posted demo of how to pause/resume over on the Loopy Pro Discord:

    https://discord.com/channels/922977925182132245/1312503916130340936

  • To do it, set up a pause and a resume button. Pause saves the clip's playhead positio and immediately stops. The resume button immediately starts the clip and restores the old playhead position.

Critical a short ramp seems to be needed for reliable behavior

  • @espiegel123 thanks so much for this! The basic transport pause is working perfectly, but also when I get 20min going to follow along closely with those steps for the custom buttons to see where I went wrong (likely that quantization and ramp setting you pointed out). Really appreciate you taking the time

You can also use the save/restore playhead technique to have up to 10 auto locator points.

If you are using long audio files, you might consider doing one file per project and using the sequencer/timeline. The seek timeline action lets you locate the global play head in convenient ways.
