Alchemy might be my favorite synth on iOS

...and I know that might be a rare opinion, but the main reason I love Alchemy (the Logic Pro version) is the ability to morph the sound to such a varying degree with only the X/Y pad. This beautiful use of the touchscreen gives me something completely unique that I don't have in my desktop studio, despite the fact that I have boatloads of money invested in MIDI controllers and other hardware. I love twiddling individual knobs as much as the next bloke, but something about an X/Y pad on a touchscreen takes me to another place of expression, especially when it has such a transformative power over the sound as it does in Alchemy. It is truly amazing for live jamming and improvising.

So now I'm looking for recommendations that I might be missing: Are there any other synths that also take full advantage of the touchscreen and allow you morph the sound so drastically with X/Y pad(s)?

Please let me know because this sort of thing brings me a great amount of joy, and I feel I'm missing out on some other great iOS synths that may offer a similar experience. Thanks!

  • Any synth (or more than one synth at a time) that exposes AUv3 parameters or has MIDI CC mapping + any XY controller app, such as Rozeta XY from the Rozeta Suite. The only limits to how much the sound can be affected are your imagination in mapping parameters.

Mozaic + the MIDI Morph Pad 2 script + your imagination + any synth(s).

    Virsyn Addictive Pro.

    Korg iWAVESTATION (no AUv3 though).

Good point. I have limited time so another thing I like about Alchemy is it's ready to go out of the box, and the X/Y pad controls more than just a couple parameters. Each segment of the pad can and often does control completely different parameters, and the way you can blend those segments together is quite lovely and unique. It's like having multiple X/Y pads within one.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm looking forward to checking them out.

I like Loopy Pro's XY pads for their ease of size/scaling/color coding and being pretty simple to target each parameter/axis with, CC or AU.

Sounds great. I'm excited to try Loopy again when the new update drops.

That's why I love using Synthmaster player, more than Synthmaster One and 2.

I don't have the iOS alchemy synth. I joined the iOS movement much later, when synths like Thor and Alchemy were removed.

    I still miss Oval Synth.

  • Cube Synth Pro uses an XY pad to similar effect. Also by @VirSyn Teraverse morphs between Tera Pro sounds (not strictly an XY pad).

Aparillo has the Orbit, similar but more complex.

I believe they're referencing the current day and supported Alchemy; in Logic Pro

    edit: nope!

It was a good one, although I don’t know if I ever used it in a song. It was fun to play with though! I have an iPad 1 and iPad 3 that both have alchemy on them, but I think only the iPad 1 has any of the IAP’s (or it might, I haven’t tried in a long time).

  • Alchemy is one of those synths where I wish we had the full version, but its presets and preset morphing X-Y pad are so good that it doesn't necessarily matter. Swipe left to reveal more controls and such to shape your personal sound further, and it's as easy as that. :)

My current favourite synth is Obsidian, but as far as external synth plugins go, Poison-202 is definitely my favourite.

Oh I'll have to check out the Synthmaster player. Thanks!

Awesome, I'll check out those as well. Much appreciated.

I am actually! Sorry for the confusion. I should add that to my original post.

Wait, you can swipe left for more controls? I don't seem to see them, but now I really want to! :)

Poison-202 is definitely on my list. Thanks for the reminder.

My dude, you gotta try it out at least in GB if not in Logic Pro. 😎

Oh maybe it's just in GB. I think I'm seeing all the controls in LP just by double clicking to expand the plugin, but you had me swiping like a madman looking for a hidden pot of gold :D

Wait a tick. You can't see the extra controls in GB? One sec mate. I'll make a quick video and upload here.

Oops my bad! I meant to say the swiping must only work in GB. I'm using LP, but your video inspired me to check out GB again (haven't used it for a few years) so thanks mate B)

  • There is no Alchemy on iOS, only the Alchemy patch player, and it's locked in LP4i. Irony is that Apple bought Alchemy, removed it from iOS, then spent 12 years to bring it back with even fewer features locked behind a mandatory subscription plan. It is what it is. Alchemy was my best synth on the desktop, and I learned in a hard way that relying too much on just one synth (or one company) is never a good thing. 😌

Interesting. I wasn't aware of the history. I will say the version in Logic is still pretty amazing. It's not the only synth I use (I have way too many), but it always puts a smile on my face and therefore it is my favorite atm.

  • Apple treat the Mac version of Logic differently.

Alchemy came with Logic Pro X 10.2 as a free update. There have been a ton of free updates. I last paid for Logic on the Mac in 2014. Every update since has been free and has included an incredible amount of new features over the years.

    10.4 got PhatFx and StepFx

CamelPhat was easily my most used 3rd party plug-in, so from a selfish POV it was great getting it, and CamelSpace, for free with 10.4 to go with Alchemy. I still use PhatFx all the time now. It's still one of the best 'make it fatter-er-er' plugins around.

The founder of Camel Audio is still with Apple I think. I'd love to know what he's been working on since Apple bought Camel.

Of course mate. ;) Enjoy GB. It's a lot of fun for marking down ideas (at least for me personally).
