No Going Back

MiniOrchestra, iSymphonic, Korg Module, Ravenscroft, and a few others. I love orchestral music. I have StaffPad and plan to take a deep dive “any day now”. In the meantime, this is about the best I can do with a MIDI piano roll editor and some cheesy strings.

Nice. It’s like a steady moving stream, not fast, just moving with purpose. There’s something uniquely expressive about orchestral music. That really soft plucked bass you’re using around 1:36 mark is exactly what I’ve been searching for today. Is that in isymphonic? Hey I picked up staffpad too over Black Friday deals. Incredible what the iPad can do!

Really looking forward to hearing more of your orchestral creations!

It’s actually two sounds played in unison. The main one is iFretless, acoustic bass. The other part is the cello from MiniOrchestra playing sixteenth notes. It’s barely noticeable, but I thought it added something. I’m glad somebody else heard it!

Have fun with StaffPad. The little bit I’ve done with it sounds promising. I think I’m just nervous about trying “serious” music. I have no formal training in such things. I was a decent piano/bass player and played in many small bands over the last 40 years or so. StaffPad is a whole new thing for me. I’m sure there is a learning curve. I just need to take that first step. I’m looking forward to hearing what you do with it. Have fun!

  • Lovely orchestral work mate. :) Paulie, you really have so much talent and a great ear for melodies and harmonies. Not gonna lie, I usually use Module Pro and Beathawk for orchestral accents in my more beatbased music, but I'm shying away from creating beat-based music (unless you count binaural beats lol) and more into Ambient. I've always wanted to get Ravenscroft, but I have Pure Piano and Pure Upright to fulfill the high-quality piano needs. :)

  • Synth orchestral hybridation is one of my favorite genre (actually most of my work).
    This sounds good.

Thank you, Jim! I also have Pure Piano and find that it has it's own unique sound. The only downside is that it seems to be limited to 4 instances, which is sort of a contradiction the the whole idea of AUv3. I really like Ravenscroft, but lately it seems to be exhibiting some issues. It just cuts out for no apparent reason. It's not really a problem. I just change the sound and it comes back without needing to restart. It's probably related to an iOS update. I have lost a few apps due to those. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. Ours was quiet and uneventful. Just the way we like it.

It would be great to have the resources of John Williams at our disposal 24-7. That's not gonna happen, so StaffPad and others like it are a good second choice that actually is available 24-7. I like to listen to the music and can usually ignore the slight differences between synthesized and real instruments. Your composition and arrangement give me plenty to listen to. Right and tight!

Thanks for listening, Ed! Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. Now it's back to the real world... until Christmas.

  • Nice track. One side note: Changing notes is going a little abrupt, especially when using classical instruments. Would be cool to have an organic treatment. An orchestra don't play notes at exact the same time, and that makes it organic.
I haven't done music since a long time, but i check this forum once a while. Would there be an app that can chance the timing of instruments or notes to an organic behaviour?.

You are absolutely correct. The beauty of an orchestra is the slight imperfections that make it human. I used a MIDI editor and all of the notes start and end at exactly the same time. I need to start using StaffPad. It is lot closer to the real thing. I guess I'm just a little nervous about trying to compose "real" music. However, I'm sure I will get plenty of help from @McD and @jo92346.

I see. Odd how AUv3s can be temperamental at times, but I'm glad you made it all work out.

Mine was visiting friends an hour north of me. Quite a lovely time indeed. :)

Uncheck quantize and play. If you don’t play, just draw the notes in the piano roll. The placement won’t be perfect.
I tried staffpad and got a refund. I couldn’t adapt to the weird score writing with the Apple Pencil.

  • This is fantastic! I love all the different orchestral sounds, and the mix of piano and orcestral is wonderful.

iSymphonic is a gem of an app. I've been dabbling in some symphonic type pieces in Logic Pro on a Mac, and while individual instruments and some string ensemble instruments sound fantastic, they can't quite approach the majesty of what iSymphonic has to offer for bigger orchestral ensemble sounds (IMO).

Thank you so much! I have to agree that the music making technology just keeps getting better and better. It's so hard to believe that this little iPad, no bigger than a pad of writing paper, can do the things it does. It's a complete recording studio that you can carry around in one hand. 20 years ago, it would have cost thousands of dollars in a conventional studio to do this. I think I spent a little over a grand for the iPad. The apps are usually less than lunch money. I can't imagine what will be available 5 years from now!

Haven't heard from you in a while. Hope all is well and that you had a nice Thanksgiving. Have a great day!

  • @Paulieworld Thank you for the well wishes. Writing seems to come and go in waves for me. I've been going up the learning curve in Logic, and have done a few things there I quite like. Being that this is primarily an iOS community, I haven't been sure about posting my Mac creations in the forums here. That said, I'll probably still be bouncing back and forth between iOS and Mac for quite a while (as I do quite like my iSymphonic, Hammerhead drum machine and Black Hole reverb).

Our dear friend Lady_App_titude mainly produces on her Mac in Motu's Digital Performer, so I think if you produce on your Mac you can still post in Creations no problem. :) Besides, I personally would like to hear what you create.

There’s something uniquely expressive about orchestral music.

It’s a genre in a sense that has been in development over 400 years. For me the strongest inducement to loving orchestral
music was all the time I spent in darkened theaters watching films with great scores.

Hey I picked up staffpad too over Black Friday deals.

This is exciting news. I hope you work past the learning curve. DM me if you have any questions and
maybe we can document the answers in a thread. There are a few StaffPad owners here but not many that share their
    creations.

Really looking forward to hearing more of your orchestral creations!

I dont care what apps you use, @Paulieworld, you always create something that pulls me into your world.

Thank you kindly,@Mcd! I sure will reach out to you when I need some staffpad questions.answered. So far I’ve purchased the Berlin strings, brass and percussion IAP, and have the free muse ones. StaffPad is a wonderful tool.

My first recommended tip would be to try using RECORD on any instrument in a score and entering notes using the metronome for reference and see if you can avoid a lot of extra pencil note entry. Editing requires the pencil… it won’t respond to non-Apple devices or finger inputs.

  • I’ll be looking forward to hearing your StaffPad creations. With your ear for melody and ability to seamlessly blend different sounds and styles I suspect we’re all in for a treat. I enjoyed this one. I’m a fan of orchestral music and I like how this piece evolves.

Hi Mac, I will too. Lately I have been sitting here, Apple pencil in hand, looking at an empty screen. Sometimes I just start scribbling away, hoping for something to click. What I like about tools such as Piano Motifs is that it puts out short ideas that give me a little push. I can spend hours happily clicking Play/Next and, every now and then, it suggests something that gets me started, and I can take it from there. Maybe I'm not really a composer, but more of a curator. I'm okay with that, but I'll just have to adopt a new mindset. Not easy to do at my age.

Hope all is well on your end.

  • Could have been worse, you could have the screen in your hands looking at an empty pencil 😊
    Lovely track Paul 👌

Been there, done that. Any plans for New Years Eve? We’re just planning on an early dinner at a nice place, a few drinks, some TV, and bed by 10:00. Peace, bro.
