Metaphor, people. Metaphor. It avoids fisking the theology.

    Pls explain.

I found some context for “fisking” that might help here.

‘fisking’, meaning the selection of evidence solely in order to bolster preconceptions and prejudices. Just as cardigans or mackintoshes are named after an inventive individual, so fisking derives from the work of Robert Fisk, the Middle East correspondent of the Independent, stationed these many years in Beirut.

I still don’t understand what @garden is saying.

If I may wax philosophical, Genesis tells us that "In the beginning, God created" and that "in the image of God, created He them". Therefore it is in our fundamental nature to create. That's how I view my creative acts - as reflections of that God image.

Plenty of atheists and followers of other religions are creative people, so that doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny.

Adding religion to the conversation might have led to this:

    @garden said:

‘“in the image of God, God, created He them". Therefore it is in our fundamental nature to create.’

There might be some fisking in the “therefore” conclusion by assuming “image” goes a lot deeper than our surface appearance
and “we” all innately have God’s motivations. Expressed as a “literal” logical fact assuming one reads the text as Gospel.

Use Metaphors or read the gospel a metaphor when bring theology into the conversation is the advice.

  • @McD … like, “After his metaphoric rise he ascended directly to Heaven”?

I'm also a part of Label Radar, and I may get my music out there in front of record labels, but then if I scored a record deal, would I be pigeonholed into producing just one genre? I'm rather hesitant to put my stuff in front of record labels, not because I'm afraid of rejection or indifference but rather if I'm successful and would be pigeonholed into producing just one genre.

You raise a very valid concern, and it’s not just limited to record labels. It is a challenge across most platforms where audiences engage with creators. People often follow you because they resonate with a specific song, vibe, or style. If you experiment or release something outside of that genre, there’s a risk that those same followers might unfollow or disengage because it doesn’t match what they initially loved about your work.

This thing creates an unspoken pressure to stay consistent, even when you feel the urge to explore and evolve.

I don't know if there is balance to be achieved. The ideal would be to have an audience that appreciate your versatility. I'm afraid that is not really most people.

Then create under different names. Issues solved. Unless you’re not ok with not being recognized for everything that you create.
Or is their there something else I’m not thinking of? Surely this idea must have already crossed your mind.

  • @Blipsford_Baubie actually this idea never crossed my mind. But I'm well know in real world for a total lack of common sense. I also was just answering @jwmmakerofmusic 's point and that is not something I thought of before.

I thought it was a personal opinion, just because someone doesn’t believe in something doesn’t invalidate it, nor does belief validate something as truth.

I didn’t say it was anything but a personal opinion, but it still doesn’t stand up to scrutiny as a logical conclusion.

But it’s the impetus of @jimhanks creativity, that’s the logical end.
Here’s another excellent example of such a belief.

I will say that with all due respect, that's just a wee bit more theological than philosophical. ❤️ I mean that in the kindest way possible. The last thing we need here is another debate about religion/politics, despite how innocent your intentions were. So best to be cautious mate.

@LinearLineman No truer words have been spoken regarding creativity. It's in our blood. :) Happy continued creation mate.

Throughout history there’s many examples of philosophy, religiosity, psychology being at the very heart of the person’s creativity or thoughts, this is inevitable.

@Svetlovska mentions Viking Lore as part of a personal creative process, while still is in part practiced as a religious custom by some people today.

@jwmmakerofmusic, with all due respect- apply caution fairly. <3

When my wife says “another piece of equipment?!?” I say, “at least I don’t have a boat.”

:) Well, I did have a boat (a.k.a. ‘Bring Out Another Thousand’), and lived on it too. Very expensive things, boats. Mine was costing me over £300 a month just in mooring fees and insurance. Why ‘another thousand?’ Because every time something goes wrong or needs fixing - which is always, if you are not handy, and I’m not - the hard to find, always booked up grizzled old guy you eventually find who knows How To Fix Things, shakes his head sorrowfully, wonders what fool put the gubbins in that is currently malfunctioning, sucks his teeth, and says “Well, I can fix it. But it’ll cost you at least a grand….”

On the other hand, I don’t have a Mrs, Mister or Mx. Just me and more gear than I can shake a stick at. So there’s that :)

  • I create because I enjoy doing so. I feel a sense of achievement at having created something. Also, I know I have generally improved at what I do over the years, so again, that’s very satisfying. I’ll be honest, getting some sort of acknowledgement and praise I find up lifting. But, mostly I tell myself I do it “for myself” which again, if I’m honest is a pretty low bar. Then sometimes I think - this is so pointless. I just stop writing and creating for a while - weeks or months can go by. That is not a great place as I know I’m so much happier when I am working on something.

So many document here that their partners and close family did n’t understand the money we spend on gear and apps because they see art as a business and we can show a business plan they trust.

I guess if it’s a hobby, then there has to be a limited budget, whereas if you’re creativity is part of a paid profession, then it’s more of an investment into tools of your trade. Better tools, maybe a better return on the investment.

Personally my current music making is pure, selfless pleasure. Lots of fun making ridiculous noises. Zero income from it, lots of money spent on it, and almost no fans or listeners, so my pitch for a new Push 3 this week didn’t go down well with the mrs 🤪

When my wife says “another piece of equipment?!?” I say, “at least I don’t have a boat.”

😆 yeah, my follow-up sales pitch usually references what my mates spend on their hobbies (motorbikes, tickets to overseas football games, etc.), doesn’t always work though!

Definitely seems like it’s quite common, but I think in my case my wife eventually understood that it’s about how much enjoyment it brings to me, even if I don’t have an audience to play to.

Yeah I know my wife appreciates that too - making music is a real escape sometimes from the current craziness of the world around us.

The idea of using multiple pseudonyms did cross my mind, but it's a little too much to keep track of, lol. 😂 I produce EDM (including Trance, House, etc, HipHop (and all its subgenres), Pop, Reggaeton (albeit instrumental), Ambient (and Experimental, although nothing longer than 10 minutes these days), etc.

Meaning I'd have to keep track of multiple Soundcloud accounts and most likely pay $16/month for each one (I release quite a lot on a very frequent basis). 😅 I'd rather focus on the music in the moment than whatever pseudonym there is for whatever genre I produce.

What I meant to suggest was that it wasn’t necessary or germane to quibble the literalism of the religious reference, but that the idea could still be valid, taking that reference as metaphorical, if one weren’t a militant atheist.

Godness is a deeply embedded trope in our culture - I’m speaking from a Western, and specifically US perspective, of course - and while one may not subscribe to its doctrines, the language can be, and often is used to express certain kinds of feelings.

To avoid paying for multiple accounts, create one account as a label. Then a separate playlist for each artist.

For example: Blipsford Beats Label on SC.

    Playlists:
    Blipsford Baubie
    Krunksford Blokey
    Wonksford Willy

You see, nobody would ever suspect that is one dude! 😃

Oops, I can see how what I said could be misconstrued. What I meant was the "I chose the wrong week to become atheist" was funny. But what you said about mistaking you wasn't funny, and I'm sorry I mixed things up. I'm currently fighting a flu (or a cold, some sort of ailment), and my brain is all foggy.

But that's rather interesting, and I'm interested to learn more about the history of Portugal and Spain. :)
