Help and advice about pianoteq

Hi I am an old guy with a Casio CTK-731 which contains a Midi In and Midi out rear connection. I recently heard the great piano sound on Pianoteq 8. I have a desktop computer with Windows 10. Can I link the Pianoteq Piano Sound to My elderly Casio CTK-731 which I need as the key touch is light and I have Arthritis in my fingers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Alex

  • Hi. It looks like your keyboard has only 5-pin MIDI (no USB), so you'd need either a MIDI interface card for the computer, or a 5-pin to USB conversion box. Depending on costs, etc., it might be wiser to hunt for a modern USB MIDI keyboard controller with a light touch.

Actually, there are a number of inexpensive cables that have the USB to 5-pin MIDI interface built in. For example, this $20 one made by CME: https://www.amazon.com/CME-U2MIDI-Pro-1-out-MIDI/dp/B0BH8DHCLY?crid=2HSLPDQB5MKSO

Or, I have this one that works well, $24:

You do want to stick with one that's a name brand, not a cheap Chinese no-name, because some of the cheaper ones have smaller internal buffers and problems with sending larger volumes of data (e.g., Sysex). But either of ones I've linked are good.

For OP, once you've got the right connection between keyboard and computer, Pianoteq will work fine with your keyboard.

Did you want to run the Pianoteq application on the Windows computer? Or were you thinking of running it on iOS device and then sending the sound to the Windows PC? Running it on the Windows PC will be far easier.

As mentioned, you'll need something to convert the 5-Pin midi out to USB or Bluetooth. I don't recommend trying to hassle with Bluetooth on a Windows PC though.

  • Thanks for your help. I hope I have got this right. 1. Buy a good 5 Pin Midi to USB Cable to plug into my keyboard and also into the rear of my Computer. 2. Buy Pianoteq 8 and run it on my Windows 10 Computer. 3 . I should then be able to play the Pianoteq piano sound on my Keyboard - Trust I have got this right - Appreciate all the advice

You've got it right. However, just to be sure it's clear - the sound will be coming from the computer, not from the keyboard.

  • OK Thanks to all for the advice
