How do I achieve a delayed reverb? A gap between the hit and the reverb sounding.

I’m want there to be a distinct gap or pause between the strike and the sound of the reverb. A bit like the gap between watching a firework rocket explode then hearing it a split second later when standing in the distance. Which app would I need to do this if it’s possible?

Comments

  • isn't that what pre-delay is for?

  • Yeah that’s pre delay. You need to use a reverb that has an adjustable pre-delay setting.

  • Thanks for that - any recommendations or suggestions as to a specific app would be most welcome.

Most reverbs have pre delay but it sounds like you want something with a significant amount of pre delay. I’m not able to offer any suggestions, I don’t have my iPad at the moment. Hopefully someone will chime in.

Sounds like you want a reverb with ducking. Kleverb by Klevgrand for example. Or achieve the same with any reverb by using an envelope follower. I did a vid on envelope followers that might be useful:

Cascade has a 2.00s predelay. My absolute favorite reverb (which can be used as a delay as well) https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/phonolyth-cascade/id6447491322

    ToneBoosters 3.00s

  • Pro-r from fabfilter

The only reverb you need besided blackhole from eventide or FAC Alteza if you like big shimmers

  • Cascade is also awesome! Its def a more complex effect but a must have for getting weird!

Oh yeah, if you want a very noticeable effect like a firework, pre-delay will be snappier than using ducking

  • @robosardine If you use an iPad, FabFilter Pro-R2 has pre-delay as well as ducking. It's also the lushest-sounding reverb outside of Logic Pro's Quantec Room Simulator. For shimmers, I like ToneBooster's Reverb (it has its own shimmer section) for more everyday applications, and FAC Alteza for Ambient.

  • Aha! Thats what pre-delay does. I think I must have been ignoring it previously or just dismissed it as ‘not recognised - please fiddle with the controls you know - (like diffusion and friends).
I had a rake through my tub of reverbs and found a few with the pre delay. My favourites so far are Bleass Reverb and Room Reverb by ElephantDSP.
I’ll have to give Cascade some thought - Jakob seems to love it.
I already have several FabFilter fx - but never use them.. I just can’t take to them (crazy I know - everyone loves FabFilter .. right?) …. maybe I’ll give them another go 😃
    Thanks for the replies everyone.

As @Gavinski says I suspect you’re more likely to want ducking than pre-delay… but it does depend on how you want it to sound!

If you want to use a reverb without built-in ducking or pre-delay than you need to contrive a way to “mult” the track - how depends on the host! At one extreme this could be doubling the track, or a routing may be possible. A send to a channel where a chain of plugins can be loaded is an example.

  • You can add pre-delay to any reverb (if it doesn't have one) by placing a full wet single-repeat digital delay before the reverb on a send bus channel.

    THIS.

  • Or, if you have Drambo, you can use the Delay module (not the Delay FX) or multiples of it and a Mixer to have control over the delay between the dry sound and the wet reverb sound. (Replace Convolver with any reverb you want).

  • I like the one in Envelope.

Glad I’m not crazy. Was afraid to answer this for fear of being wrong lol

That's a simple, elegant solution. I am trying, mind you, to think of a reverb app I have that doesn't have pre-delay, I think nearly all do.

  • Check out Velvet Machine. You can get some extreme predelays with it while dialing in the response curve visually. Fun to use and weird.

Thanks. To test this setup, I dug through my plugin collection and found a few: Eventide Spring Reverb and ShimmerVerb, both without a pre-delay parameter.

A little bit OT but it is worth to mention IMO. Do combine 100% wet single-repeat 1/8 delay with next delay set to 1/2D. Try one or two simple straight hits and you will get a nice syncopated echo. I have a good experience with ChowMatrix+K7D or ChowMatrix+OtherDesertCities. I haven't found a delay app where I can set this explicit time value to 1/8+1/2D, except in Yukawa.

    @filo01 Kosmonaut?

Thanks, I'm looking forward to check it.
EDIT: You can't set 100% wet on the delay tap.
