水酸化ナトリウム : 1994-2024 30th anniversary remaster - Korg 01W/fd + Atari Falcon
In December 1994, "水酸化ナトリウム” (Suisanka Natoriumu, sodium hydroxyde) was born: an album of heavily techno-influenced electronica crafted entirely on the Korg 01W/fd and Atari Falcon. It was a personal exploration of sound, shaped by the tools and inspirations of its time.
Now, 30 years later, this remaster revisits the original tracks with care, trying to enhance their clarity while attempting to stay true to the raw, experimental energy that defined the project. This isn't about perfection, it's about honoring the spirit of the music and sharing it anew.
Whether you've been a listener from the beginning or are discovering "水酸化ナトリウム" for the first time, I hope you'll enjoy this glimpse into the sounds of 1994, revisited for 2024.
Thank you for being part of this journey.

Great stuff, Joseph! The 01/W fd was so far ahead of its time in the 90s. Mine is safely packed away in a cool, dry place. I am often tempted to get it out and fire it up. I used a DOS program called Texture for my sequencing. It was written by Roger Powell, keyboard guy for Todd Rundgren. It would drive people crazy these days. Everything was keyboard based. Ctrl-this, Alt-that, etc. It became second nature after a while, and I thought it worked very well.
I did quite few tracks with the 01/W. Unfortunately I recorded everything to metal cassettes and lost the original stems. I did remaster a few tracks with a few modern apps and they turned out okay. I have three that I’m particularly fond of. If you get some time to kill, I would love your thoughts.
Iceland - 01/W only, recorded in one pass.
Cydonia - written by an old band mate, performed by me, and features a killer guitar player, Tony Iovino.
Rise and Shine - a bebop jazz inspired piece that I performed, again featuring Tony Iovino.
That are all on SoundCloud and Bandcamp, but you might need to hunt around a bit. Like I said, if you get some time to kill.
Also, I have the score for FTEL, but I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I can’t seem to follow it. I had a mental picture of it, but no luck. It’s been a while since I actually read music. That’s probably it.
Quite chilly but sunny today. Going out for Korean barbecue for lunch. Have a great day!
thanks @Paulieworld that was a very different era. The hardware was gorgeous, and the software.... not there yet. But it made things possible.
I also lost lot of stuff because of the support I used: 8 track reels. They got lost, damaged, more were lost, more damaged, and the very few remaining I'msure would sound like shit if I steel had something to play them.
About that score, I have decades of bad habits and writing for myself only. I told you it wouldn't necessarily be easy to read.
for those who don't like bandcamp:
