I can’t connect my old iPad to email or AppStore (iPad 2010)

edited December 9 in Hardware

by this i mean that I’ve kept alive my first iPad, (the first ever iPad, 2010) so that I can keep alive a few vintage and deprecated music apps. great software.

for a long time this worked because I could email tracks from that device to my newer machines for further work using audicopy, into AudioShare, and sending the file using AS’s email functionality

but now i can no longer sign onto any email accounts, i keep getting a pop up saying that either my user name and/or password is incorrect, or that the server Im using could possibly be a fake out icloud deal…(nonsense on all counts).

what the hell? had Apple deliberately coded closed the email door on older devices, cutting off what allows me to keep the thing connected to the outside world?

Dropbox won’t connect either, though this is likely more to do with the fact that the old ipad is running old iOS…6.x…

is mail also dependent on the iOS? If so this was a recent shift, email export out of AudioShare was connecting fine last year.

So workarounds?
I have iMazing, and I am willing to try this, but the mismatch in iOS is probably a deal breaker, but even if not, it is a pain, adding several steps.

  • Is airdrop a possibility? Can you sign into email on safari?

You may need to reconfigure your mail settings. It is possible (likely) that the mail servers you are trying to access use more secure or different security settings than when you last accessed them.

This could be related to expired root certificates that are usually supplied with an operating system (not only apple ones). These certificates help to identify servers and websites the iPad connects to as genuine. If these certificates have expired, then many applications will deny access to servers, services and websites because of the security error they get.
Have a look on the web about "iOS root certificates" or a similar search. You may find instructions about how to update the certificate.
Here is a link that allows at least the widely used let's encrypt certificate to be updated. Disclaimer - do this at your own risk! http://cydia.invoxiplaygames.uk/certificates/

  • Thank you @espiegel123 and @catherder for rapid responses
    Thing to try
I really wanted to blame Tim Apple…

Can you log into your email accounts using a web browser like Safari?

Or maybe you can transfer your files using AudioShare's "WiFi Drive" feature?

    Or Apple's AirDrop?

  • I had a similar issue on my old iPad mini (1st gen) running on iOS 7... Very few websites and services are working now, I think the root certificates included in this OS are too old to be accepted by a lot of servers. Sadly I couldn't find a way to update them, it seems it can only be done by updating the OS :(

Maybe change the thread title to ask for specific help? If people know what you’re asking for help with they might be more likely to open the thread.
