Getting to know LP but...

Hi, I have a problem which I can't fix and I'd be glad of some help. I've spent a week or so finding my way around LP including watching lots of YT vids etc. So yesterday I had my guitar running through my Scarlett 4i4 into an audio channel in LP. I included Crunk2 as an effect post fader. It worked! Hurrah!

But today I started a new project, same setup but now not only does Crunk2 not work but no other effect I add (eg reverb) works either! The guitar itself is working as I can hear it through the headphones but no effect. As I'm still finding my way around it may well be that I've changed a setting which is disabling effects but if so I have no idea what it is. One thing that may be relevant is that I've turned up the volume on the 4i4 to the point where it's starting to clip but in LP the fader is not showing much volume at all.

Help would be much appreciated! Let me know if you need more info.

    Hi,

From what you describe, you have direct monitoring turned on in your interface. I suggest that you turn that off. Otherwise, you are going to hear a mix of your unprocessed guitar and the processed guitar in your headphones with a slight delay between them.

I am guessing that your input channel in Loopy's mixer might be muted. Check Loopy's mixer and see if the input channel is muted or not.

If it is not muted and the fader is turned up and you see no signal then we need to have you try some troubleshooting steps. Here are some steps I suggest to get the troubleshooting started:

    • shut down your device using 'slide to power off'
    • disconnect everything from your device
    • restart your device wit nothing yet connected
    • after you have finished rebooting and logged on to your device, re-connect the peripherals
    • launch Loopy Pro and create a new project from Loopy Pro's default project
    • show Loopy Pro's mixer
    • start a screen recording and recording the following:
    • play your guitar so that we can see the input levels
    • on your interface, adjust the input level until your loudest playing gets into the range of about -10db on loopy's mixer

Share that screen recording so that we can see/hear. As long as you have not adjusted anything but the input fader, the output level should be the same. To share the recording, you may want to upload to YouTube as unlisted and share the link.

Note that you usually want your amp sim to be be a pre-fader effect otherwise the guitar tone will change if you adjust the channel fader.

Thanks very much for your quick response - this was driving me crazy! Nothing was muted but I shut down the iPad, disconnected everything and restarted. I also reset the Scarlett to factory settings and connected everything back up. This worked and now everything is working fine as before! Thanks again a million! :) I have noticed that Loopy Pro crashes from time to time and I think this is probably because the iPad is ancient. I'm seriously considering investing in a more recent iPad (mine is an iPad Air 1st Gen)

  • @Rhod : An Air 1 is probably not ideal. They don't have much memory. While I use Loopy Pro on my iPad 6 quite a bit, it definitely does even better on a device with a little more memory than that if I use anything besides a minimal number of plugins.

  • I can't afford a new one but I can afford the iPad Pro 5th gen (2021) with 512gb memory. Do you think that would be good enough and fairly future proof? Sorry, slightly off the original topic but useful for me to know.

  • Memory means RAM not disk space.
The iPad Pro 5th gen has 8 GB of RAM which is great.
The 1st iPad Air has only 1 GB. Not enough for anything.

Anything with an M1 or up will come with 8GB base on chip until you get to the 1TB HD which gets 16GB RAM.
Just make sure it's an M1 or better chip since that will be much more memory than you have now.

For what it's worth I have an Air 3 and it works really well with Loopy Pro at only 3GB of RAM so this upgrade will be dope for your set up.

@Rhod - @HarlekinX beat me to it! with a link and much more concise. Well done.

  • Thanks for that everyone. M1 processor sounds like the way to go. Christmas present to myself it is then! :)
