A chilling vocal performance from a 1915 poem

edited December 2024 in Other Music Content

I came across this performance of Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘Boots’ from its use in the trailer for the forthcoming 28 Years Later movie, They have integrated it with an insistent electronic pulse to stunning effect. But it is that original vocal performance by Taylor Holmes from back in 1915, when the horrors of World War One were still revealing themselves which sets the hairs rising … apparently so disturbing that it is still used as psychological torture during Escape And Evasion training for special forces:

It’s all there in the original:

I mean… if PTSD had a soundtrack. Mr Holmes’s Edwardian audiences must have been rocked by that.

  • Yeah, played the film trailer yesterday and was instantly hooked on the nightmarish soundtrack. Obviously a YouTube rabbit hole opened up and I'm now subbed to an old vinyl guy ready for Koala rips.
