Just bought Midi Step and it has this white wasted bezel frame around it.

Hi, I just bought this new step sequencer, Midi Step, and wondering why this thick white bezel frame is around it. I hope there's a way to eliminate this because I'm losing valuable space. This is alone as the app. In AUM, I see it's not there but again a lot of wasted space.
Please let me know.
THX:)

  • @4pockets_paul @4Pockets @4Pockets_Support Not sure which one is currently being used by Paul, but I figured I'd tag him somehow. Yeah, that white bezel is a different UI choice to be fair.

Please tell him to make a preference to remove it. I'm on an 11" Ipad and it makes the workspace too small for my fingers. I would have hoped to utilize all of the area. Thanks

  • Did you not get this message when you launched the app? His stuff is optimised for use as an auv3, the standalone is just a bit of a bonus that probably helps him get the apps through the review process.

  • I probably did, but I didn't read it. Ok, thx

    Ah okay, this makes sense.

Hopefully he'll see the comment here. :) And I myself am on an iPad Mini 7, so I know what you mean regarding miniature UIs. 😅

Of the 4pockets apps that I have purchased, these three do NOT make use of the whole screen. The white 'bezel' is an annoyance, to say the least.

It's such a shame, because I don't want to build kits in AUM or whichever host.

The ones I use standalone are below.

    Digistix, Midistep, Strummer

On a small iPhone it's a right faff to navigate.

  • Maybe the developer can fix this. I really see no point of this. I was hoping this sequencer would open up fully.

You're the first person to mention it as an issue. I doubt it's on his radar or will be without some action on your part. You might try emailing support @ 4pockets.com. Paul sometimes frequents this space, but not recently since October, I believe.

This is what I expected .. even an option to change background to black would be better

You do realise that you can only do basic things such as preset management etc in standalone mode though right? I mean I guess you could build out patterns blindly without any sound.

  • I’m struggling to understand the issue here. Paul’s apps, and MidiStep in particular, pack a huge amount of functionality in - and as a result have a fairly busy interface. I have fat fingers and still manage to enjoy using MidiStep on an 11” iPad in AUM - where it uses all the interface space (see full screen iPad image below). How it appears in standalone is irrelevant to its usability, as it is not designed to be used there.

When transitioning to the iPhone (and in some iPad apps) Paul breaks the sections up appropriately. It usually wouldn’t make sense to squeeze an additional half a section in as it would not be functional - as can be seen in the iPhone full screen images below.

While an argument could be made that there is a little room to stretch the iPad interface horizontally, this would only be detrimental if it was to be carried over to the iPhone proportionally, due to the very different aspect ratios. I am personally very happy that Paul makes these apps available and usable on the iPhone. Many other complex apps don’t… e.g Scaler 2, Chordjam, etc.

I think the app is great so far. I just bought it and my first thought was great, but .why this bezel ? Ok, fair enough about the standalone. It doesn’t really matter and most apps don’t even run this way. I’m talking in AUM.

My iPad screen area is not a desktop, so all the area is valuable for my eyes and fingers. Perhaps you are on a 13 iPad?

Look at the size of Thesys.

Thesus is not available for iPhone…

The tiny bit of horizontal stretch you are proposing would make no real difference on playability, IMHO.

This is the largest I can get it on my iPad Air 11inch.

I think the issue you have with not being able to get the maximum possible coverage in AuV3s which is the primary design case for this app, is more one of the problem with AuV3s fitting to lots of different screen sizes more than one in which this developer is at fault.

Imagine you are designing an app that you want to work with as many screens and as many hosts as possible - not easy to start with and definitely unobtainable without compromise. With all the screen sizes and all the different host setups, getting a one size to fit all at all times is pretty much impossible with the current technologies. This is compounded when you want to split your app spaces up in to smaller sections or opening windows.

There simply is no ideal solution as all apps are not the same and some require different ideas to get the best all round solution. This devs apps seem pretty good compared to some and while not perfect for all fits, you can see that there has been some thought and some compromise towards some hosts over others and some devices over others, which is fair enough imo.

Just to add. Not saying this to be argumentative. If this app isn’t just right for you then it isn’t and that’s all there is to it :)

I will get used to it. At the end of the day, it's not a huge deal, but think it can be better. I know the developer is working constantly on improving the app. I manually dragged the corners and the bottom of the anpp and it adapted better. I'm on an 11" too. Another thing I'd love to see is themes or an option to change the colors of the sliders. The pink is killing kinda me :) I'm very pleased though with the app. It's powerful.

I’ve sized mine by hand to fit the screen as best I can. In AUM, once you do this it remembers the size when you next open the app in that particular project. So, I can close the app from view and next time I touch its icon to open it again, it will give me that same size - this is very handy. I often use multiple AuV3 keyboards on screen and I want to close them quickly at times to access AUMs mixer. I have all my keyboard midi on one mixer channel and open them in an order that lets me see the next icon to touch as I open them. Takes some forward planning, but with AUM remembering how they open, it’s very usable!

  • It's all good now :) I manually resized it.thanks
    Great app! Love it!,
