Mpe synths

Is there a list of Mpe midi synths?

  • There's a list found in FAQ for the Linnstrument at Roger Linn's site:
    https://www.rogerlinndesign.com/support/support-linnstrument-recommended-sounds
Go to middle of that page and click on 'iPad OS MPE' button to see list, with comments under each entry if you click.

Here's list of mobile apps that support MPE, found at Roli's website:

    Thank you, that's helpful

  • I've owned two different Keith McMillan MPE MIDI controllers. In general, I've found it difficult to map a MIDI controller's MPE parameters to a synth app's MIDI parameters. It can be done, but it is difficult (for me). I think MPE works better when the hardware and the software are designed to work together (e.g., Osmose and EaganMatrix, Roli Seaboard and Noise, etc.). If I played more ambient, techno, or film-score music, I would definitely get an Osmose. I had the opportunity to try one recently and it was absolutely incredible.

Here are a couple more lists. I'm not sure how up to date or complete any of them are:

    https://community.polyexpression.com/t/ios-apps-supporting-mpe-wiki/82

    https://abwiki.loopypro.com/doku.php?id=mpe_instruments

  • I don't have a complete list or anything, but i don't buy synths anymore that aren't MPE. I'm sure there are a few of us here that if you list what kind of synths you're after we could tell you all the capable ones.

  • It as been discussed multiple time.

    Here’s one last year.

You can use the search to find more threads.

True, but it seems like that link, in particular, could confuse things. Polyphonic aftertouch is an entirely different protocol than MPE.

And, in fact, many synths that claim to be MPE are only partial or incomplete implementations. So it pays to do your homework.

  • I’m using Entonal studio. It needs MPE for best performance with microtonal scales. As each note gets a different pitch bend amount.

I see Logic Pro and GB in the list. All built in synths?? Is there a setting somewhere?

  • I don't have Logic Pro, but I know Apple (confusingly) calls their MPE support "MIDI Mono Mode". I asked ChatGPT which built-in synths in Logic Pro for iPad support MIDI Mono Mode. Here's the answer, not guaranteed to be totally accurate, of course:

In Logic Pro for iPad, several built-in synthesizers support MIDI Mono Mode, enabling compatibility with MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) controllers. This feature allows for more expressive performances by assigning each note to its own MIDI channel, facilitating individual control over parameters like pitch, timbre, and expression.

Built-in Synthesizers Supporting MIDI Mono Mode:
    • Alchemy: A versatile synthesizer renowned for its extensive sound library and advanced modulation capabilities.
    • EFM1: A frequency modulation synthesizer capable of producing a wide range of sounds, from classic FM tones to complex textures.
    • ES2: A powerful subtractive synthesizer offering rich analog-style sounds with extensive modulation options.
    • Quick Sampler: Allows for quick and easy sampling, enabling users to create custom instruments from recorded sounds.
    • Retro Synth: Emulates classic analog and digital synthesizer sounds, providing a nostalgic palette of tones.
    • Sampler: A comprehensive sampling instrument for creating intricate, multi-sampled instruments with detailed control.
    • Sculpture: A unique physical modeling synthesizer that simulates the characteristics of real-world materials to create organic sounds.
    • Vintage Clav: Emulates the classic clavinet keyboard, delivering the distinctive percussive sounds popular in funk and rock music.

    Enabling MIDI Mono Mode:

To utilize MIDI Mono Mode with these synthesizers:
    1. Select the Instrument: In the channel strip, tap the instrument slot and choose one of the supported synthesizers.
    2. Access Extended Parameters: Open the instrument’s interface and locate the extended parameters section.
    3. Activate MIDI Mono Mode: Set the MIDI Mono Mode parameter to “On” (with common base channel 1). This configuration allows the instrument to receive each note and its control change messages on separate MIDI channels, facilitating MPE functionality.

For more info I think you could search Apple's extensive Logic Pro for iPad user manual for 'MPE' and/or "Midi Mono Mode":
